Fans of post-metal / post-rock take note! We don’t normally delve into these realms but for Aussie doomsmen Hawkmoth, an exception must be made. The Sydney foursome just released their latest beast, ‘Godless Summit’. It’s a progressive, instrumental labyrinth of moody riffs and crushing slow burners. The title track captures the rising tension that Hawkmoth have grown to master. ‘Ibex’ delivers a bottom-heavy gut punch before the intricacies of ‘Mala Fide’ hit. Whereas the tail end of the record is swallowed up by the epic ‘Charnel Grounds’. It crashes and burns toward a charging conclusion, which is perhaps the most thrilling moment on ‘Godless Summit’. The record carefully balances light and dark, weaving sparse atmospheres with the overwhelmingly dense. It’s a musicians album, no doubt. Hawkmoth offer up something for doom fans and don’t pull any punches. Hard to believe it’s been almost four years since the release of ‘Calamitas’. A welcome return.
