Wildhoney – ‘Horror Movie’

CONTDRIFTCOVER

Mercury Girls, The Spook School, Tigercats and Wildhoney have teamed up for the new compilation EP ‘Continental Drift’ (coming August 26 via Slumberland Records & Fortuna POP!). The Baltimore quintet have contributed two exclusive tracks to the eight song collection, kicking off with ‘Horror Movie’. As the band states in the presser, ” Horror Movie’ weaves dark lyrical content with an upbeat tempo and cheerful pop melody, reflecting the experience of trying to process trauma without the luxury of time and space to fall apart. The song also evokes a sense of triumph upon arriving at a point of clarity, resisting the ongoing, relentless urge to blame oneself for an abusive relationship, and coming out on the other side stronger and wiser than before.”

Wildhoney – ‘Laura’

Wildhoney return with the new single ‘Laura’, taken from their forthcoming six track EP (out October 16 from Topshelf Records). The ‘Your Face Sideways’ EP sees the Baltimore rockers push their sound to greater depths. Somehow ‘Laura’ manages to retain the energy of their previous releases, while adding a dreamier feel. The five piece recorded the EP with Gary Olson (Crystal Stilts, Frankie Rose, Literature) at Marlborough Farms in New York. Thumbs up!

Wildhoney – ‘Sleep Through It’

‘Sleep Through It’, Wildhoney‘s first full length is now available through Deranged/Forward Records. The Baltimore band first impressed with their self-titled 2013 EP featuring ‘Like Me’, followed by the much loved ‘Seventeen Forever’ three tracker last year. I’ll admit, Sounds Better has had a soft spot for Wildhoney since the get go, there’s something very raw, fun and honest about these guys that’s instantly likeable. A mix of garage rock, punk aggression and shoegazey ambiguity. ‘Sleep Through It‘ embodies this, beginning with the title track and previously streamed single ‘Fall In’.

Wildhoney – ‘Sleep Through It’

‘Owe You Nothing’ sports a twee edge, with downcast lyrics that hinge on sugary vocals, backed by a jagged wall of sound in the latter half. Truth be told, we’ve heard that sound plenty of times before. But, Wildhoney do add to the mixture, there’s accessible pop-centric melodies combined with lo-fi charm, they’re delivered with a frenetic energy that bowls the listener over. ‘Maybe You’re Crazy’ is a good example of this. It sucks you in with catchy vocals and then hits with a wave of noise.

If a heavy dose of noise pop is your thing, then Wildhoney’s ‘Sleep Through It’ will be right up your street! It’s full throttle most of the way, with a short breath for air during ‘Tea Leaves’ and ‘FSA’, otherwise it doesn’t let up. The standouts ‘Seventeen’, ‘Fall In’, ‘Molly’ and the title track are worth the price of admission alone. Wildhoney aren’t taking themselves too seriously and are producing some really fun noise pop along the way. Download a digital copy here, or head to Deranged/Forward for the vinyl.

Wildhoney – ‘Fall In’

Baltimore shoegazers Wildhoney have shared ‘Fall In’ from their forthcoming LP ‘Sleep Through It’ (expected early 2015 via Deranged Records). The foursome are fresh from a CMJ showcase and are sounding as sharp as ever! It’s a short blast of wild-eyed rock, contrasted by whimsical vocals. It follows Wildhoney’s ‘Seventeen Forever’ EP (available here).

Wildhoney – ‘Seventeen Forever’

Wildhoney officially launch their second EP ‘Seventeen Forever‘ this weekend (@ The Crown, May 31). The Baltimore shoegazers (Joe Trainor and David Litz on guitars, Alan Everhart on bass, Lauren Shusterich on vocals and drummer Zach Inscho) formed in 2012 before releasing their much loved debut EP last year. Since then the five piece have shared the stage with Wild Nothing, The Pains of Being Pure At Heart, Weekend and Ringo Deathstarr (among others). Now it’s time to pour over the latest EP, as mastered by Jake Reid (Screen Vinyl Image, Roomrunner, Technicolor Teeth).

Opener ‘Seventeen’ features Lauren’s debut vocal performance, she nails it. Wildhoney have evolved from their early demos, holding onto the playfulness of early cuts (‘Like Me‘ for instance) but adding more pop appeal. But of course, this is still very much a rock record, the screaming guitars of ‘Get Out Of My Dreams’ make sure of that. The vocal melodies work really well amongst the noise, evident by the pretty hooks of ‘Soft Bats’. It reminds me of Camera Obscura but with amps turned up to eleven! It’s hard to find fault with this EP, perfect for fans of Veronica Falls, Echo Lake or September Girls.

The only downer is that it’s only three songs, so a few points will have to be knocked off the score just for that reason. The good news is, Wildhoney are hitting the studio in about a week! Their debut full length will be out this Fall through Deranged / Forward Records. Given the strength of everything we’ve heard thus far, it’s likely to be really special.
