Ulrika Spacek – ‘I Don’t Know’

Regular readers will be familiar with the work of British solo artist Rhys Williams, aka Viscous Liquid. Last year he delivered the EP ‘Songs For Jealous Lovers‘, a spacey pairing of surf rock and shoegaze. This week we can reveal his new project, Ulrika Spacek. The duo’s debut single ‘I Don’t Know’ is a lo-fi psych rocker with dreamy vocal harmonies and liberal phaser use! Ulrika Spacek have already recorded much of their debut album, more soon.

British shoegazer Viscous Liquid has a new EP called ‘Infinity Pool’! The solo artist (Rhys Williams) posted the title track along with ‘How I Learned To Stop Worrying’ a couple months back but there’s also a fresh tune called ’17’. It arrives following the brilliant EP ‘Songs For Jealous Lovers’ which is being released on limited cassette (for cassette store day) on September 27 via One Note Forever. Viscous Liquid just keeps getting better and better!

Earlier this year we had a listen to Viscous Liquid’s stellar song ‘When I See You‘ in the lead up to an EP release. In case you missed it, the UK-based solo artist (Rhys Williams) has now delivered ‘Songs For Jealous Lovers‘ and it’s a great listen for fans of shoegaze or lo-fi surf pop. Head over to Bandcamp for a download if it lifts your skirt!

VISCOUS LIQUID - 'SONGS FOR JEALOUS LOVERS'

UK-based solo artist Rhys Williams aka Viscous Liquid started posting his spacey tunes on Soundcloud over a year ago before releasing his debut EP last October. So far we’ve heard an impressive mix of lo-fi surf pop, shoegaze and drone. Viscous Liquid has successfully fulfilled his aim to “sound like the Beach Boys strung out on barbiturates playing in some sort of wind tunnel.” But to keep it fresh, the new EP will feature his catchiest song to date ‘When I See You’ from the tentatively named ‘Songs For Jealous Lovers’ (expected late February / early March). It’s a surf-tinged jangle pop track with summery vocal harmonies. It eventually descends into a chaotic wash, so I suppose pop can only last so long! Keep an eye on Bandcamp for an official release and/or head to Soundcloud to hear more cuts from the EP, like the delightfully druggy ‘Beach Party Yesterday‘.

Viscous Liquid – ‘It’s Sort Of Like Being A Long Way From Home, All The Time’

VISCOUS LIQUID

Viscous Liquid is a silent achiever, slowly drip feeding Soundcloud with new tracks every few months. Perhaps you remember ‘Never Fun‘ from back in March? Either way, the Reading-based solo artist is a real talent. Some find the vocals a little too sunken in the mix, I can understand that. However, the overall composition and extreme layering of sounds is where the gold is at. No word on an official release as yet but my guess is it’ll appeal to fans of all kinds – drone, psych, shoegaze, lo-fi etc.

VISCOUS LIQUID - 'NEVER FUN'

You know when someone blasts an awesome track in the next room but you can’t quite hear it? That’s the kinda feeling I get from ‘Never Fun’. There’s an intentional obscuring of sound going on, like your cochlea window is closed but your eardrum’s bedroom door is left slightly ajar. Or… perhaps I just need more sleep. Viscous Liquid is a solo artist from Reading, there’s a bunch more tunes over at Soundcloud to discover.
