Ummagma recently posted a hypnotic new video for ‘Galacticon’, taken from their latest EP ‘Frequency’ out through Moon Sounds Records (available here). Filmed in Ukraine, the video features icy visuals and some brilliant aerial shots (as premiered by Exclaim). The Ontario-based duo collaborated with a number of guest artists for the EP, including Cocteau Twins’ Robin Guthrie and Lights That Change. Ummagma have also been busy working with A.R. Kane on new material. A.R. Kane recently announced their live return with a spot at Primavera Sound in June, and a headline show in Manchester next month (their first in 20 years)!

The Virgance Feat. Shauna McLarnon – ‘Down The River’

the-virgance-paradigm-3

The Virgance delivers his third album ‘Paradigm 3‘ this month, a relentless shoegaze monolith! The British solo artist (Nathan Smith) is joined by Shauna McLarnon (of Ummagma) who lends her dreamy vocals to ‘Down The River’. Nathan’s work has never been made for the masses, and ‘Paradigm 3’ is no different, it’s an experimental odyssey that shows continuing growth. There’s a lot to get swept up in, an album that commands zoning out!

Sounds of Sputnik Feat. Ummagma – ‘Light Scheme’

sounds-of-sputnik-new-born

Sounds of Sputnik’s debut album ‘New Born’ was released this week, featuring the talents of dream pop duo Ummagma. Take a peek at the new video for ‘Light Scheme’ below. The Moscow-based artist (Roma Kalitkin) blends his love for post rock and shoegaze with a bunch of remixes thrown in too! A number of notable guests have contributed, including drummer Graham Bonnar (Swervedriver/ Brian Jonestown Massacre), producers Fran Ashcroft (Damon Albarn, Lords of Acid) and Marc Joy (Primal Scream, Oasis) plus many more! It’s very much an international affair, a melding of creative minds from Ukraine and Russia (during a time of social upheaval). Roma’s twenty plus years of playing with various post punk and shoegaze acts has paid off – pick up ‘New Born’ via Ear To Ear Records.

Sounds Of Sputnik Feat. Ummagma – ‘New Born’

sounds-of-sputnik-new-born

Moscow rockers Sounds of Sputnik have released a pair of singles ahead of their debut LP ‘New Born‘ expected late next month. ‘Overdrive’ builds upon post and psych-rock influences with bent, fuzzy guitar layers and pressing drum work by Graham Bonnar (Swervedriver/Brian Jonestown Massacre) to create a backdrop for guest vocalist Shauna Mclarnon’s (Ummagma) melodic vocals. Both members of Canadian-Ukrainian dream-pop vets Ummagma lend a hand on New Born, with Shauna’s husband and bandmate Alexander Kretov supplying additional vocals, production work, and cover art. It’s not the first time the two bands have crossed borders to collaborate –  Roman Kalitkin, shoegaze veteran and solo-creater of  Sounds of Sputnik pitched in guitar and writing work for Ummagma’s Antigravity LP (‘Live and Let Die’), as well as contributing a track for their ‘Lama Remixes EP.’

Title track ‘New Born’ follows up with more of Shauna’s lovely vocals, this time with a lush, dreamy backing of guitars, moody piano, and distant drum work that creates a sense of grandiosity. It’s a change of pace, but the creativity and talent in the collaboration is evident and should make for an exciting release! If it catches your interest check out the New Born pre-order packages on Bandcamp, or head to Soundcloud to listen to more unreleased tracks! [by Dave Lytton]
