The Laurels – ‘Reentry’

the-laurels-reentry

The Laurels return with a warbling, space rocking, acid tinged oddity called ‘Reentry’! Since releasing their debut album ‘Plains’ in 2012, the Sydney-based foursome “have not spent the past four years sitting in their lounge room punching cones…” *cough* …instead they’ve kept busy writing and recording their second LP. The Laurels have also recruited Jasper Fenton in the wake of Kate Wilson’s departure. ‘Reentry’ picks from their shoegaze/psych origins but it’s a much more eclectic and adventurous sound than we heard on ‘Plains’, which is no doubt a good thing! ‘Sonicology’ is out October 14 via Rice Is Nice (pre-order). Side note, if you’ve never heard their ‘Mesozoic’ EP (jump on that here)!

Nuggets Revisited!

Nuggets

Rock critic Lenny Kaye compiled a garage rock collection in 1972 that would become one of the most influential in history, paving the way for punk to come. The beauty of ‘Nuggets: Original Artyfacts From The First Psychedelic Era: 1965-1968’ was that it featured 27 virtually unknown acts, proving marketability doesn’t always rein supreme. This week marks the fortieth anniversary and Rhino is celebrating with a re-mastered reissue. In Australia, Warner has also delivered ‘Nuggets: Antipodean Interpolations of the First Psychedelic Era 1965-1968’. The release features current rock acts covering the originals, take a listen to Pearls cover The Standells ‘Dirty Water’ and The Laurels tackle The Thirteenth Floor Elevators ‘You’re Gonna Miss Me’.

The Laurels – 'Manic Saturday'

Vinyl pre-orders for The Laurels upcoming debut ‘Plains’ are available now, shipping August 20 via Rice Is Nice. There’s only 300 – so be snappy (includes immediate 320k download)! The Sydney-based quartet have stepped beyond their shoegazing ‘Mesozoic’ EP, instead opting for a vintage psych sound. Take the album cut ‘Manic Saturday’ as an example.

In a recent interview with The Music The Laurels Piers Cornelius explained, “All of our favourite bands have been really ‘60s-sounding ones with lots of harmonies and sparkly guitar lines. I guess we wanted to make a record that sounded like lots of our favourite records. Because we get called shoegaze, because of how we sound live, lots of people think or assume that all we listen to is shoegaze, but we just wanted to show that if you take away all the live sound layers of feedback and mushed vocals, the songs stand out a bit more when there’s not a wall of sound and there’s some dynamics to them. We wanted to make a record that someone can put on on a Saturday or Sunday and it will actually sound good, rather than all of their housemates wandering out of their rooms and going, ‘Shut up!’”

The Laurels – ‘Changing The Timeline’

Following on from the shoegaze epic ‘Tidal Wave‘, The Laurels have posted ‘Changing The Timeline’ from their forthcoming debut album ‘Plains’ (out in Australia via Rice Is Nice on July 13). This time round The Laurels deliver a strutting psych rock number complete with inebriated artwork. The vintage sound has a 70s feel that wouldn’t be out of place behind a car chase scene or exploitation flick of some sort! Another solid effort from the Sydney four piece.
