Melody’s Echo Chamber – ‘Crystallized’

Parisian artist Melody Prochet aka Melody’s Echo Chamber, will release her debut 7-inch through Fat Possum later this year. The psych pop leaning single ‘Crystallized’ was produced by Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker which explains a little! It’s a warm tune with plenty of sounds jumping in to steal your attention.

The Laurels – 'Black Cathedral'

Sydney isn’t known for its shoegaze bands but if there’s one to check out, it’s The Laurels. The only bad thing about their 2011 ‘Mesozoic’ EP is that it isn’t a full album! The Laurels produce an impenetrable wall of noise that bends, moans and twists you into submission!

The four piece formed five years ago in Sydney’s inner west and produced a few early singles including ‘Art School’, ‘Wandering Sky‘ and more recently ‘Turn On Your Mind’. Apparently the lack of a full length album is due to funding issues. Not laziness. Cough! But what hasn’t been put on record has made it’s way to the stage. The Laurels have played alongside A Place To Bury Strangers, You Am I and Tame Impala. Unfortunately The Velvet Underground and My Bloody Valentine have so far eluded them!

The Laurels ‘Mesozoic’ EP features stand outs like ‘What She Does To Me’. They make this track sound effortless, as if the sunken vocal melody was an afterthought. Even with its drudging pace, it manages to build with intensity. ‘Black Cathedral’ is a little less subtle, hitting you in the chops with a fist full of guitars and feedback. The oddly timed vocals break out into a chorus like a classic 90s rock anthem (without naming names)!

The Laurels – ‘Mesozoic’ EP tracklist…
1. Black Cathedral
2. What She Does To Me
3. Turn On Your Mind
4. Merry Go Round
5. Run For Cover
6. Until The End
