Versus People – ‘Be Away’ EP

Swiss shoegazers Versus People return with their latest five track release ‘Be Away’ (download). The foursome posted the title track video to match; a dense and dissonant ode to escape. If you’re a fan of sedate, blissed out records then this is for you. It’s relentlessly submerged, lo-fi and warped throughout. ‘Sunflyers’ is perhaps the most upbeat of the lot. Though I particularly like the wall of sound effect they achieve midway through their cover of Air’s ‘Dead Bodies’.

Versus People – ‘To Your Eyes’

versus people-ep-artwork

Introducing Versus People, a fresh faced trio out of Martigny, Switzerland! If you’re a fan of woozy guitars and hushed vocals, take a peek at their new EP ‘To Your Eyes‘ (out this week). The guitarists (Alex, Lucien and Aurélien) produce waves of fuzz over a drum machine. They’re not afraid to let their 90s shoegazin’ influences show! It’s a little pitchy at times and will be predictable (to some) but overall it’s an interesting debut. Looking forward to what comes next.

Neiv – ‘Decades’ EP [Premiere]

neiv-neiv-ep-400

Ever heard a shoegaze song with a saxophone!? You’re about to! Take a listen to ‘Last Cry’ from Neiv‘s latest EP ‘Decades’ (an all analogue recording). It’s a dramatic, inventive, and at times surreal collection of dream pop and shoegaze that bends your expectations of the genre.

The songwriting rule book has gone out the window in favour of unpredictable compositions, usually found in prog or post rock. ‘Summer Daze’ is one example, it’s a slow burner that transitions from post punk into ambient and then explodes with a noisy crescendo. ‘Killed By A Unicorn’ (great title) is a creepy tune, it’s backed by a big synth that sounds like a swarm of bees. It has the same saturated effect but without the guitars.

Closing track ‘Sedaced’ (‘Decades’ backwards), is a reworking of the single ‘Decades’ but this time in reverse! A clever twist to end the EP, and with unnerving results (especially on the vocals). Due credit also goes to Neiv’s producer James Aparicio, known for his work with Mogwai and These New Puritans. The Swiss trio (Pj, Jennie and Bugy) have created a unique EP with depth, pick it up through Worn Pop Records from July 5 on digital and limited white vinyl!

The Churchhill Garden Feat. Hideka – ‘Forever’

THE CHURCHHILL GARDEN FEAT. HIDEKA - 'FOREVER'

The Churchhill Garden (solo artist Andy Jossi) has returned with the new single ‘Forever’ (free download). The Swiss producer teamed up with Japanese singer Hideka for the song, who is known for her work with The Pristines and also for her solo material (which is mostly dream pop or shoegaze related). However ‘Forever’ is a cinematic post rocker, it swells and contracts with multi-layered sounds galore! Paging Alcest fans.
