Makthaverskan – ‘Ill’

Run For Cover / Luxury Records delivered Makthaverskan‘s third long player ‘Ill‘ this October. The Swedish four-piece mix post punk and dream pop with stunning results. The Gothenburg natives sound absolutely brilliant on ‘In My Dreams’, it’s an instant classic. Makthaverskan contrast aggression and anguish with beautiful melodies and catchy hooks. It’s an easy record to fall for. Maja Milner’s vocals steal the spotlight, and sound like they’re from another era. Producer Hans Olsson Brookes spent three years crafting the album with the band. ‘Ill’ benefits from his focused approach, its cohesive and without filler. A 2017 must-listen, love it.

Wy – ‘Never Was’

‘Hate To Fall Asleep’ left me open mouthed on first listen; it’s a stunning dream pop tune in the vein of Cocteau Twins. It leads Wy‘s new EP ‘Never Was’ which you can stream in full below (courtesy of Hybris). The young duo (Ebba and Michel) are based in Malmö (Sweden). Their debut release is an eclectic mix of moody anthems that whets the appetite for a full length. ‘The God Concept’ and the opener are the most dream pop-centric of the EP, here’s hoping they follow this direction. Lovely work.

Denver, Colorado – ‘Eternal Love // Usual Fog’ [Premiere]

denver-colorado-eternal love-usual fog

Jump into the first public stream of Denver, Colorado’s impressive debut single ‘Eternal Love // Usual Fog‘. Denver, Colorado is a solo project backed by a music collective; led by Sweden’s Simeon Pappinen Hillert (a touring sound engineer with acts including Niki & the Dove, Elliphant and School ’94). The Gothenburg-based project plan to release ‘Eternal Love // Usual Fog’ on their forthcoming EP ‘…and it still keeps on rising’ (due later this year). The wonky tune was “inspired by foggy nights and shoegaze tunes echoing over the sea,” a mix of lo-fi pop and bittersweet melodies. There’s some generous reverb in there too! It reminds me a little of early Mercury Rev, and has me very excited to hear what comes next.

Follow The Sea – ‘Blue Joy’ [Premiere]

Häxrummet Records (home to the wonderful Star Horse and Indoor Voices), are releasing the debut full length from Follow The Sea this week. We’re celebrating with the first public stream of ‘Blue Joy’! Follow The Sea formed in 2013, and have so far released two well-received EPs. The Stockholm duo’s latest is a fuzz rock feast, mixing post-punk, lo-fi and drone. It’s a diverse listen, as evident by the ambient lead single ‘Virhe’. However, it all leads to the epic closer ‘Breeze’, a progressive rocker that runs at almost twenty minutes. Follow The Sea are brave enough to explore their Scandinavian melancholy by all means necessary! Pick up ‘Blue Joy’ from May 25 on digital and vinyl.

School ’94 – ‘Common Sense’

Swedish new wave act School ’94 are set to release their second EP ‘Bound’ next month through Luxury. The first single ‘Common Sense’ is another stunner with an 80s feel. To me, it sounds a little like Kate Bush fronting The Cure. Either way, great tune!

We. The Pigs – ‘Papercut’

The debut 7inch from Sweden’s We. The Pigs has arrived, out now through Discos de Kirlian (vinyl / digital). The Malmo collective combine propulsive punk and layered shoegaze sounds to craft a raw brand of noise pop. ‘DK31’ is a solid debut EP, for fans of Westkust, Fever Dream or Wildhoney.
