Lorelle Meets The Obsolete – ‘Chambers’

LORELLE MEETS THE OBSOLETE - 'CHAMBERS'

Continuing a big week for album releases is the fresh LP ‘Chambers’ by Lorelle Meets The Obsolete (available through Sonic Cathedral UK and Captcha Records USA). The Mexican duo (Lorena Quintanilla and Alberto González) kicked off their tour last week, leaving us to lap up their third long player. It follows the singles ‘What’s Holding You?‘ and ‘Music For Dozens‘ with eight more psych wonders to discover. ‘Chambers’ was recorded with the help of Cooper Crain (from Chicago drone legends Cave) and mastered by Sonic Boom (of Spacemen 3). Surprisingly, whilst the album maintains the garage charm of its predecessors ‘On Welfare’ and ‘Corruptible Faces’, it’s less noisy overall. By degrees of course, there’s still no lack of LSD dripping guitar haze, it’s just more focused. ‘Sealed Scene’ for instance, is a colourful mix of surf rock madness mixed with LMTO’s trademark psych powers! Meanwhile ‘I Can’t Feel The Outside’ has an almost British swagger to it, with playful melodies interchanged between the husband and wife team. ‘Chambers’ sounds consistently vintage, like the beautifully sedate ‘Dead Leaves’ that could be mistaken for a 70s rocker. Lorelle Meets The Obsolete have produced a large amount of music in the past few years, I’m not sure how they manage to maintain the high quality without becoming watered down. And yet here we are again – recommended.

Black Hearted Brother – ‘Got Your Love’ (Edit)

BLACK HEARTED BROTHER - 'GOT YOUR LOVE' EP

Slowdive continue to announce more reunion dates, together with Neil Halstead’s side project Black Hearted Brother. The trio have kept busy, last month electronic wiz Mark Van Hoen gave us Children Of The Stones and now Black Hearted Brother have announced a new EP called ‘Got Your Love’ (which follows their 2012 debut album ‘Stars Are Our Home‘). The release will feature remixes of the previously released album cut ‘Got Your Love’ bundled with an all new song ‘Don’t Take The Weight’, pick it up from March 31 via Sonic Cathedral. The ‘electro-gaze’ tune is BHB at their most poppy, with Halstead’s vocals floating over an ocean of synths and saturated guitars.

Lorelle Meets The Obsolete – ‘What’s Holding You?’

LORELLE MEETS THE OBSELETE - 'WHAT'S HOLDING YOU?'

Exciting new single from Lorelle Meets The Obsolete (via The Quietus)! Given the Mexican duo (Lorena Quintanilla and Alberto González) only released their last album ‘Corruptible Faces‘ earlier this year, I didn’t expect anything new this soon. Amongst the sea of psych rock releases this year, Lorelle Meets The Obsolete have shone through. Perhaps because they’ve made their own concoction out of shoegaze, stoner rock and psych. Or maybe its just because they’re great songwriters.  Either/or, you can pickup ‘What’s Holding You?’ (with the b-side ‘Medicine To Cure Medicine Sickness’) on September 23 through Sonic Cathedral (UK) / Captcha (US) – available on limited-edition blue vinyl 7inches or digitally. It will then be on the band’s third LP ‘Chambers’ (due early 2014). Catch Lorelle Meets The Obsolete on tour in the UK and Europe this September / October – dates here.
