Boy Friend – 'Egyptian Wrinkle'

On February 6, Texas dream pop duo Boy Friend will release their album ‘Egyptian Wrinkle’ via Hell, Yes! Boy Friend are Christa Palazzolo and Sarah Brown (formerly of Sleep ∞ Over) who crafted their debut EP in 2010 after a falling out with Sleep ∞ Over’s Stefanie Franciotti. Boy Friend followed it up with the ‘Lovedropper’ 7-inch before starting work on ‘Egyptian Wrinkle’ in Austin. I’m not 100% sure how the lyrics relate to the title, or what the title even means, so if you figure it out please let me know!

Texas has done it again! Introducing Sleep ∞ Over from Austin. The dream pop outfit have produced ghostly, lo-fi goodness ever since their first cassette EP. Sleep ∞ Over are already being compared to Beach House and are generating an almost equal amount of hype on the eve of their debut LP ‘Forever’, due on September 27 via Hippos In Tanks.

Formed in early 2010, leading lady Stefanie Franciotti has had to fight to keep Sleep ∞ Over on track. We’re lucky that the ‘Forever’ album is even being released after two bandmates left the group just before recording sessions kicked off. These struggles aren’t apparent on tape, its a strong debut. Since then Sleep ∞ Over has been bolstered by the addition of touring members Jesse Jenkins, Christine Aprile and Eli Welbourne.

‘Forever’ is consistently hazey, wavering, and at times just plain icey! However, its an odd contridiction because the record has an analogue feel (it sounds like it was tracked on some lovely warm tape)! There’s plenty of vintage sounds created by vintage gear, which means at times there’s intentional clipping and distortion (as levels get too hot).

‘The Heavens Turn By Themselves’ is one example of this, where Stefanie’s vocals get a little Kate Bush at times. Sounding more like the Cocteau Twins than Suicide, which was noted as an influence. If you’re looking for sunshine best move along, Sleep ∞ Over‘s ‘Forever’ is a haunting lament, but its one of the best nightmares you’ll hear this year!
