Ringo Deathstarr – 'Drag'

Ringo Deathstarr’s ‘Mauve’ (the vinyl) finally landed in my lap this week. It’s been a long wait. An emotional one *grin*. To celebrate the occasion here’s an album cut, the dreary charmer ‘Drag’.

Ringo Deathstarr – 'Mauve' Released

Texan shoegazers Ringo Deathstarr release their new album ‘Mauve’ today through Club AC30. Wax fans can pick up a limited run on Lilac coloured vinyl! Those that pledged for the album to be made (via Pledge Music) received a digital copy on September 12 including Japanese bonus tracks, a pledge bonus track called ‘Lose’ and the remixes ‘Shadow (Ian Crause Remix)’ and ‘So High (CMJK Remix)’. ‘Mauve’ follows the release of the ‘Rip’ single and last year’s ‘Shadow’ EP. And put simply, if you are a fan of anything Ringo Deathstarr has done before, ‘Mauve’ won’t let you down.

The opening section of the album dishes out waves of chronic distortion, uncomplicated vocal hooks, machine gun drums and yes, lots of lovely warm reverb! The angular rocker ‘Drain’ is an early highlight, complete with buzzsaw guitar breaks. It’s a killer tune, running at just over two minutes. On the following track ‘Slack’, Elliott takes over the mic for lead vocal duties. It’s a straight forward, no nonsense punk rock tune. Great stuff! Dare I say similar to early My Bloody Valentine?

‘Brightest Star’ then diverts from the shoegazing chaos into dream pop territory. Followed by the hypnotic and spacious ‘Drag’. The remainder of the record is filled with solid shoegaze that eventually hits the volume limit, breaking into an audible blur on the closer ‘Wave’. The production is solid throughout without sounding over produced or polished, however the vocals could have been set lower in the mix. For example, the frantic energy of ‘Burn’ is partly overshadowed by droney backing vocals, I want to hear those crazy guitar tones at the fore! Clearly Alex’s vocal takes won the heart of the engineer’s fader finger. Not that its a bad thing.

There’s a spontaneity to these songs that only comes from, well, being spontaneous I guess!? Something that comes easy for a band that’s delivered two albums and ep’s in little more than two years. ‘Mauve’ is one of the strongest rock albums to cross my ears in 2012. Take a listen.

Ringo Deathstarr – 'Sailin' On'

Ringo Deathstarr have released a cover of ‘Sailin’ On’ by 70s hardcore punk band Bad Brains. Sadly the release has been prompted by the murder of Esme Barrera, who’s body was found on New Year’s Day in Austin, Texas. Esme was a well loved figure in Austin, working at the Girls Rock music camp and Waterloo Records. To help, Ringo Deathstarr are asking for donations to cover funeral expenses. As posted on Soundcloud, Ringo Deathstarr states, “We are donating a Cover of Bad Brains’ Led Zeppelin/ James Brown ‘Sailin’ On’ to those of you who donate $1.00 or more to http://forouresmeb.blogspot.com/ and send a copy of the confirmation email to ringodeathstarr@gmail.com and you will proptly be e-mailed the high quality MP3 of our version of Bad Brains “Sailin’ On”.

Ringo Deathstarr – 'Shadow'

Austin’s biggest Shoegaze export Ringo Deathstarr are currently working on a new, as yet untitled album, to be released in 2012. This comes after their brilliant full length debut ‘Colour Trip‘, released in February this year. In fact, Ringo Deathstarr fans have been well fed as their early material was recently re-released on the ‘Sparkler’ EP. Plus the trio recorded the cover tune ‘Dear Future‘ for a Japanese anime show.

Ringo Deathstarr – Shadow EP out on Club AC30

Now we’re lucky to have the ‘Shadow’ EP on the horizon, featuring four new tunes to be released through Club AC30 on November 7. Initially I thought it was a little odd for Ringo Deathstarr to release another EP with a new album on the way. Especially given their freshly announced touring commitment supporting The Smashing Pumpkins on their European tour (dates below). But after hearing the EP (which premiered via Nylon Magazine) it all makes sense. ‘Shadow’ isn’t the super catchy, pop-leaning single you’d expect. It’s a dark monster of a tune that creeps up on you and throws a crazy rock tantrum!

Ringo Deathstarr teamed up with Jason Reece (of …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead fame) for ‘Shadow’. The drummer and co-frontman lends his screams to the latter half of the track while singer/bass player Alex Gehring sings the sweeter parts. The strength of ‘Shadow’ comes from this contrast, Jason’s vocals add a raw rock abrasiveness to Ringo Deathstarr’s sound we haven’t heard til now.

Alex recently told Drowned In Sound that ‘Shadow’ is a stand out for her, “‘Shadow’ is possibly my favourite song out of everything we’ve done. We recorded it as a basic track where Elliott (Frazer) was just shouting, yelling and singing at various parts with scratch guitaring over the top, and he asked me what I thought of his vocal melodies which he’d labelled “Jason Reece vocals” and we kind of agreed that it did have a similar vibe. Then, almost a week later we were actually on tour with …Trail Of Dead and Elliott was like, “Shall I ask Jason if he’ll sing on the track?” and so he did and Jason was only too pleased to sing on it. Since both bands are based in Austin, it meant we could set up a studio and lay the vocal parts down pretty easily. I’d love to collaborate with them again. It was really fun, and kind of adds spice to our music.”

Club AC30 will also release a number of ‘Shadow’ remixes by the likes of Stuart Braithwaite of Mogwai and Tim Burgess of the Charlatans. Fans that snap up the very limited 10″ vinyl will get a download card to access the remixes. Did I mention the vinyl is cherry blossom scented? This is sure to please Ringo Deathstarr’s Japanese fanbase!
