Cull – ‘The Sacred Burial Urn’

CULL - 'BA NOI'

Dust off your silver jumpsuit and get set for some vintage sci-fi, courtesy of psych/gaze outfit Cull. ‘The Sacred Burial Urn’ is taken from the Sydney foursome’s debut EP ‘Bà Nội‘ (grabbit)! Which is awesome, the only downside is the title is real tricky to type! Apparently it means ‘grandmother’ in Vietnamese. Thanks Google, but you’re probably wrong.

Towns – ‘Young At Heart’

TOWNS - 'YOUNG AT HEART'

Towns have posted their latest single ‘Young At Heart’, an upbeat psych pop tune due for release March 3 via Howling Owl (digital / cassette). The Bristol rock act have never sounded so catchy, a step away from their overdriven guitar sound and shoegaze wash. The single was mastered by their label mate Oliver Wilde. Catch Towns live in London this month with Dead Rabbits and The Telescopes! Meanwhile the four piece ready their debut album ‘Get By’ for a May release.

Happy Holidays

YOUNGHUSBAND - 'I DON'T INTEND TO SPEND CHRISTMAS WITHOUT YOU'

Big thanks to all of those who contributed to SBWR this year, the bands, labels and interviewees. And of course, to the regular readers willing to take the time out to listen to a debut release by an artist they know nothing about. *warm and fuzzy over here!* Apologies for the many unanswered emails – the inbox is really unhealthy! Looking forward to the mountain of records on the way, in particular Cheatahs, Temples, Warpaint, Delay Trees, Beliefs, Ringo Deathstarr, Be Forest, Swervedriver, Hibou, Total Slacker, Elastic Sleep, Lorelle Meets The Obsolete and The War On Drugs! Happy holidays all, regular updates return mid January. Here’s a cover of Margo Guryan’s ‘I Don’t Intend To Spend Christmas Without You’ by Brit psych outfit Younghusband, free download via Sonic Cathedral.

Lorelle Meets The Obsolete – ‘Music For Dozens’

LORELLE MEETS THE OBSOLETE - 'CHAMBERS'

Mexican psych duo Lorelle Meets The Obsolete have announced their third record ‘Chambers’ will be out February 17 via Captcha (US) and Sonic Cathedral (UK/EU). Take a listen to the rollicking single ‘Music For Dozens‘ which plods along like a monster before breaking into a dizzying sprint. Once again Lorelle Meets The Obsolete show they’re full of character, spun out sounds and are a heap of fun to listen to.

Cull – ‘Keep My Star’

CULL - 'BA NOI'

Super excited for Cull‘s debut EP ‘Bà Nội‘ which was released today (download here). The Sydney-based quartet swing between psych rock and shoegaze with an acid drenched sound that always surprises. Cull are not afraid to experiment with random sounds, weird tempo changes or unorthodox song structures which is why they’re so compelling. Closing track ‘Keep My Star’ is one example of how spaced-out these guys can get while still sucking you in with a catchy melody. Previous singles ‘Good People Disappear’, ‘Canker’ and ‘I Thought We Was’ are all available for streaming via Soundcloud. Locals can catch Cull live on the east coast this month (see dates).
