Au.Ra – ‘Spare The Thought’

AU.RA - 'SPARE THE THOUGHT'

The opening minute and a half of ‘Spare The Thought’ is a wash of trippy samples and noise before breaking into a fantastic slow burning psych tune. Pick it up on Au.Ra‘s new 7inch (out through LebensStrasse Records). We first heard from the Aussie duo (Tom Crandles and Tim Jenkins) late last year with the ‘Sun‘ single. Since then Au.Ra have released a number of solid tunes, including their Art Is Hard release ‘Morning‘. Just last week the guys were featured in NME – the future is bright!

Sunbeam Sound Machine – ‘Cosmic Love Affair’

SUNBEAM SOUND MACHINE - 'COSMIC LOVE AFFAIR'

Whoa, listening to ‘Cosmic Love Affair’ is like taking a hot bath on mushrooms. Not that I’ve ever tried it, but y’know, poetic license and all that. The single comes courtesy of Melbourne muso Nick Sowersby (aka Sunbeam Sound Machine) who has signed up with Dot Dash/Remote Control. Pick up this psych popper on his forthcoming double EP (available from November 29).

Boardwalk – ‘It’s Over’

BOARDWALK - 'IT'S OVER'

Following the beautiful lead track ‘I’m To Blame‘, Los Angeles duo Boardwalk (Amber Quintero and Mike Edge) have delivered their debut album via Stones Throw. Drawing comparisons to dream pop contemporaries Beach House and Mazzy Star, the pair has been harshly judged for similarities. That aside, Boardwalk’s record deserves to be judged on its own merits. Amber’s voice is perfectly suited to their slow motion, psych pop sound, which is full of strong melodies and sedate pop numbers. Album cut ‘It’s Over’ is just one example. The LP could use a few tempo changes and perhaps have taken a few risks but overall its a welcome debut that’s well worth a listen (for fans of Widowspeak, Tamaryn and Memoryhouse).

Sun Machine – ‘Save Your Sorrows’

SUN MACHINE - 'SAVE YOUR SORROWS'

Last time we checked in with Tom Crandles (formerly Colours) he was teaming up with Tim Jenkins (Parades) on the dream pop project Au.Ra. Now the Sydney-sider has re-located to London and is putting the finishing touches on his latest solo project called Sun Machine. As you can see from the artwork, Tom isn’t much into marketing. *wink* but… with songs like ‘Save Your Sorrows’ that’s no biggie because the intergoogle is already in a spin. There’s a bunch of other lo-fi psych pop gems from Sun Machine on Soundcloud.
