The Capsules – ‘Super Symmetry’

the capsules-the long goodbye-artwork-cover

On May 20 The Capsules will release their fifth album ‘The Long Goodbye’, building on the electronic dream pop of last year’s full length ‘Northern Lights & Southern Skies’. It’s a pleasure to premiere the new video ‘Super Symmetry’, a beautifully animated clip of mass industrialisation! The Dallas-based trio (Julie Shields, Jason Shields and Kevin Trevin) come armed with sharp production talent and of course, Julie’s vocal harmonies. Pre-order ‘The Long Goodbye’ at Saint Marie Records.

Moonbell – ‘Warm Head Rush’ [Premiere]

San Francisco shoegazers Moonbell return with their new LP ‘Afterlives’ and SBWR is happy to premiere the album cut ‘Warm Head Rush’. The four piece have already impressed with their ‘Parallel‘ and ‘Figurine‘ EP’s in 2012/11 and their forthcoming full length looks to capitalize on their Creation/4AD inspired sound but now with the added influence from 60s and 70s garage rock! ‘Afterlives’ was mastered by Mike Wells (Tamaryn/Weekend) and will be available digitally and on limited cassette from Moonbell’s own label Hypnogram! from April 1. The label focuses on DIY recordings, ‘Afterlives’ being a DIY experiment of its own and the result of a self-recording and mixing effort. Be sure to check back with Hypnogram! when it goes live next month. In the meantime, check out this loose and lovely lo-fi rocker!

Dead Leaf Echo – ‘true.deep.sleeper’ EP [Premiere]

Brooklyn’s Dead Leaf Echo deliver their four track EP ‘true.deep.sleeper’ today via Moon Sounds Records (digital/vinyl)! The new release follows the quartet’s debut LP ‘Thought And Language‘ and leads into a fresh set of tour dates across the USA and Canada (see below). The title track ‘true.deep.sleeper’ is a densely layered affair with a seductive vocal line woven through the wash. Clearly all of last year’s live shows have paid off because Dead Leaf Echo are sounding more confident than ever. The EP pays homage to the shoegazing anthems of their debut but then extends into electronic territory for the ambient ‘heaven.sent.sleeper’. There’s a definite 80s synth pop influence throughout, the dark and swirling ‘so.wrong’ is the best example, not unlike the early days of The Cure. Whereas ‘blind.island’ is a sojourn into experimental dream pop, with its twisted vocal performances and overall oddity. ‘true.deep.sleeper’ is a welcome edition to Dead Leaf Echo’s catalog and will appease fans hanging out for album number two which is expected later this year.

Doorbells – ‘Dancing With A Ghost’ [Premiere]

Treat yourself to the ambient haze of ‘Dancing With A Ghost’, the first public track from Doorbells forthcoming EP ‘Afterlife’ (available from March 4). It’s the work of Ohio native Nic Berlin, who collaborated with producer Adam Korbesmeyer for the EP. Together they recorded ‘Afterlife’ over ten days in Adam’s studio (Whiteout Audio) in Cleveland. During recording, Nic was going through a break up (always a great songwriting catalyst), he explains it was like “feeling as if you were playing hide and seek. I was writing these songs as a form of closure and didn’t want her to hear or see anything I was working on.  It was bizarre that I had a secret living in my own home, being with someone for so long and not sharing your art or music with them because it would unsettle them in some way, is daunting.” The emotional tone is evident on ‘Dancing With A Ghost’, Nic’s melodies push through the multi-layered texture of the song, somehow remaining delicate and bold at the same time. If you’re a fan of dreamy jangle pop, this is one to check out!

Blackstone Rngrs – ‘Judas Tree’ [Premiere]

Blackstone Rngrs are set to deliver their six track EP ‘Descendant’ on February 25 through Saint Marie Records (pre-order). Influenced by classic 4AD-era noise and dream pop, the Texas trio layer their melodies into a swirling, ambient mix of guitars and synthesizers. ‘Judas Tree’ is our first listen, it’s a dynamic slow burner that builds around Ruth’s vocals. Blackstone Rngrs released their much loved debut EP ‘ Into The Sea’ in 2012,  following it up with a an extensive tour with stops at NXNE and SXSW. Judging by ‘Descendant’, it’s going to be a very busy year for them!

Shortwave Broadcaster – ‘Everything You Do Is Deja-Vu’ [Premiere]

Keith Canisius is best known for his dream pop creations and as the founder of Danish shoegazers Rumskib. This week he adds another feather to his cap, releasing an ambient, experimental EP called ‘Everything You Do Is Deja-Vu’ under the moniker Shortwave Broadcaster (available via Saint Marie Records).

Shortwave Broadcaster – ‘Everything You Do Is Deja-Vu’ [Premiere]

Keith was inspired (in name) by Milton William Cooper, a broadcaster who claimed to have seen proof of alien existence. In turn the four track release is fittingly spaced out, with meditative signals, hypnotic rhythms, reversed samples and electronic textures throughout.

However the surrealist soundscapes aren’t heavy listening, while fans of avant-garde / drone wouldn’t blink, there’s still leading melodies for more casual listeners to hook into (‘Europa’ for example).

‘Everything You Do Is Deja-Vu’ is a taster of sorts, there’s a sonic theme throughout that could be extended into more indulgent territory and longer compositions. However, there’s no details of a Shortwave Broadcaster full length as yet. In the meantime, pick up the EP at Saint Marie Records.
