Hawkmoth – ‘Calamitas’

HAWKMOTH - 'CALAMITAS'

SBWR rarely delves into the realms of metal but when it’s this good, exceptions must be made! Hawkmoth‘s latest album ‘Calamitas‘ was released today (CD/Digital) featuring a collection of instrumental stoner/sludge rock meets post-metal chaos! It’s been almost four years in the making and follows their 2011 debut LP. The Sydney-based four piece have enlisted drummer Jason Canelas for the recording which has added a new layer of complicity and depth. ‘Calamitas’ was tracked at 301 Studios (the same space used for Springsteen’s latest) with mastering from Alan Douches (Dillinger Escape Plan, Japandroids, Odonis Odonis). So yes, it’s one of the better sounding post-metal albums you’re likely to hear. Album cut ‘Hitler’s Dogs’ is the shortest song on the record but it still drops waves of doom on your head! Fans of the genre will want to take the time out for this one – stream/download the rest here.

Russian Circles Feat. Chelsea Wolfe – ‘Memorial’

RUSSIAN CIRCLES - 'MEMORIAL'

Singer Chelsea Wolfe adds her hazy brilliance to the title track of Russian Circles new album ‘Memorial’ (out October 22 via Sargent House). The instrumental post metal vets sound amazing with their label-mate (who just released her ‘Pain Is Beauty’ LP). So far Russian Circles fifth album is sounding solid – diverse and atmospheric. Chelsea Wolfe will tour with the band later this year to support the release (see dates).

Russian Circles – ‘Deficit’

RUSSIAN CIRCLES - 'DEFICIT'

When it comes to post metal, I’m pretty clueless. But when it comes to Russian Circles, an exception must be made, ‘Deficit’ is just so damn awesome! The apocalyptic guitar tones work perfectly against one of the most impressive drum tracks I’ve heard this year – amazing work. Pick up Russian Circles new album ‘Memorial’ from October 29 through Sargent House.

Islands – ‘Golden Path’

Time to break genre ranks. This is a rarity for SBWR but the searing post metal of Islands is just too good to pass up. Complete with blood draining vocals and monsterous riffs, Islands new self-titled EP will be released on July 28. There’s something in this release for metal fans and post rock stalwarts. The opener ‘Golden Path’ had me thinking it was the second coming of Isis. The Sydney-based five piece are set to tour the US and Europe next month.

Pelican – 'Lathe Biosas'

Chicago based post-metal band Pelican release their new EP on April 10 via Southern Lord Records. They’ve opted for the catchy title of  ‘Ataraxia/Taraxis’!  ‘Lathe Biosas’ (free download here) is old school riffage with no frills. If you love heavy guitars but can’t stomach devilish metal vocals then this might be right up your street!

Dumbsaint – 'Don't Forget To Bring Down The Sky'

Post-metal act Dumbsaint have released their epic new single ‘Don’t Forget To Bring Down The Sky’. It starts off nice and spacey but that’s just to lull you into a false sense of security before they crush your ears in with mother lovin’ noise! The Sydney-based instrumental trio release their debut record ‘Something That You Feel Will Find Its Own Form’ via Bird’s Robe Records on April 3 (pre-order here).
