Liz Harris (of Grouper) unveiled a new single last week with her side project Helen. It’s only short, but ‘Motorcycle’ points to an exciting debut album, one filled with copious reverb n’ fuzz! The Portland-based band, who originally planned to play thrash metal, will release the record ‘The Original Faces’ on September 4 (via Kranky).

Drowse – ‘Melt’

drowse-soon-asleep

Experimental solo artist Kyle Bates (aka Drowse) is set to deliver his latest album ‘Soon Asleep’ on June 9 via APNEICVOID. The Portland music maker blends drone, noise n’ shoegaze influences into disturbing yet pretty cinematic pieces. ‘Melt’ is a dynamic and interesting listen but is bound to divide listeners. It’s the kind of tune you’re either going to appreciate or not, no fence sitters! Lap it up below…

Quell – ‘Waves’

Introducing Quell and their self-titled album featuring the beautiful ambient rocker ‘Waves’. Originally a solo project, Quell is now the work of Tyler Richardson and Hakeem Hashash. There’s some really amazing tunes on this eight track release, ‘Drown’ should please Whirr fans while the latter half of the album diverts into experimental, post rock territory. It sounds like a band finding their feet but with loads of potential.

Appendixes – ‘Burn’ [Video Premiere]

Here’s our first look at ‘Burn’, the new video from Appendixes. It’s an effortlessly catchy tune, a mix of synth and dream pop that will lodge in your head. *now humming “…please don’t burn my house down”* The Portland-based trio (Eric Sabatino, Beth Ann Morgan and Devin Welch) formed in 2012 after creating David Lynch inspired demos (with the aid of a reel-to-reel). The following year Appendixes gave us ‘Neon Green Fear’, an incredible track (listen here). Fast forward to 2015 and we have the forthcoming EP ‘Everyday Use’ featuring ‘Burn’ and four others. Track & Field are releasing a limited run of cassettes, available from January 24 (pre-order here)! Oregon locals can catch the release show on the same day at The Know with Corey J Brewer and Fog Father (details).

Grouper – ‘Call Across Rooms’

This Halloween Grouper will deliver her new LP ‘Ruins’ via Yellow Electric/Kranky! ‘Call Across Rooms’ is the first public track, more evidence that the Portland native can devastate listeners with just her voice and a piano. The recording was made back in 2011, during a visit to Portugal. It’s bleak but beautiful. ‘Call Across Rooms’ is bound to be one of the most blogged tunes of the week, and rightly so!

Lubec – ‘Almost Vince’

Almost Vince‘ is the lead single from Lubec‘s forthcoming LP (out later this month). The Portland-based four piece were recently featured in the Sundance documentary ‘New American Noise’ and have toured alongside Speedy Ortiz, The Young, Screaming Females and more. They contrast their lo-fi sound with three-part vocals. The guy/girl harmonies are a real highlight, the sugar on a rough and raw mix! But it’s not all DIY, Lubec are in good hands with producer Robert Comitz (Hornet Leg, K Records). Keep an ear out for their debut full length ‘The Thrall’, out via Like Young Records on September 21.
