Broken Water – ‘Drown’

I must admit, the opening bars of Broken Water‘s ‘Drown’ didn’t impress me much. And then, the brilliant guitar tones kick in and it all takes shape! ‘Drown’ becomes a more impressive monster the longer it ploughs on and the more abrasive it becomes. Hands down one of the strongest noise rock recordings of recent months. The Olympia Trio are set to release their full length ‘Tempest’ through Hardly Art on May 29.

The Janitors – 'Death Song'

If Nick Cave decided to start a shoegaze band, I think it might sound a little like The Janitors ‘Death Song’. The Swedish five piece describe themselves as “evil shoegaze boogie woogie”. If that’s not enough to get you curious then there’s little more I can type! Inspired by the work of  LoOp, Spacemen 3 and JAMC, the Janitors create an almighty wall of noise with a vintage twist, thunderous and all consuming. Pick up the Janitors ‘Death Song’ on the ‘Worker Drone Queen’ EP at Bandcamp.

Rancho Relaxo – 'I Want You'

I’m not going to attempt a Simpsons joke, though it’s hard to resist! Norways’s Rancho Relaxo have released their new record ‘Happy Friday Experiment’ featuring the lo-fi psych opener ‘I Want You’. The dredging groove of ‘I Want You’ will win fans of the Brian Jonestown Massacre or anyone else that likes their tunes drugged out and noisy!

Black Mountain – 'Mary Lou'

‘Mary Lou’ runs at more than seven minutes; rolling though spaced out vocals, wailing progressive psych rock, noise… you get the idea. Canadian rockers Black Mountain have put their hands up to soundtrack the new apocalyptic surfing film ‘Year Zero’ and ‘Mary Lou’ is our first listen. Think Mad Max with surfboards… hmm, confused much? See the trailer here. The ‘Year Zero’ soundtrack will be available on vinyl and digitally through Jagjaguwar on April 4.
