Rancho Relaxo – 'I Want You'

I’m not going to attempt a Simpsons joke, though it’s hard to resist! Norways’s Rancho Relaxo have released their new record ‘Happy Friday Experiment’ featuring the lo-fi psych opener ‘I Want You’. The dredging groove of ‘I Want You’ will win fans of the Brian Jonestown Massacre or anyone else that likes their tunes drugged out and noisy!

Black Mountain – 'Mary Lou'

‘Mary Lou’ runs at more than seven minutes; rolling though spaced out vocals, wailing progressive psych rock, noise… you get the idea. Canadian rockers Black Mountain have put their hands up to soundtrack the new apocalyptic surfing film ‘Year Zero’ and ‘Mary Lou’ is our first listen. Think Mad Max with surfboards… hmm, confused much? See the trailer here. The ‘Year Zero’ soundtrack will be available on vinyl and digitally through Jagjaguwar on April 4.

Black Twig – 'Lake Song' and 'Death Scene'

Black Twig‘s debut album ‘Paper Trees’ has some of the best guitar tones I’ve heard in a while. It’s a polished affair that leaves lo-fi charm by the door, noisy rock rarely sounds this clear and this good. However, not all of ‘Paper Trees’ is set to fuzz, there’s more jangly indie pop tunes than distortion on the album cuts. It’s an incredible effort from an up and coming Finish band via independent Helsinki label Soliti. The lead single ‘Lake Song’ was released late last year, ‘Paper Trees’ is available now.

Technicolor Teeth – ‘Chrystalline’

‘Teenage Pagans’ takes the award for most disturbing/creepy album cover of 2012… so far. Those eyes follow you! The trippy new record from Technicolor Teeth covers everything from garage punk, noise rock and shoegaze. ‘Chrystalline’ shows off Technicolor Teeth’s ability to produce strong 60s styled vocal melodies and harmonies. The guitar breaks almost steal the show before the mountainous chorus ends it off. Tapes coming soon from Let’s Pretend Records.

Highlands – ‘Railroad’ and ‘Evil’

I’ll admit that 2012 hasn’t thrown up a lot of quality shoegaze rock so far. It’s all been pop and electronic centric. Thankfully, Highlands step up to the challenge on their new full length ‘Singularity’. The Southern Californian four piece swing between psych rock and shoegaze, crafting a swaggering wall of sound on the album opener ‘Railroad’.
