Hope Sandoval And The Warm Inventions – ‘Isn’t It True’

hope sandoval and the warm inventions-isn't it true

Despite how you might feel about Record Store Day, there is a silver lining! Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions have announced that a third album is on the way, and it kicks off with a special Record Store Day limited red 7-inch on April 16, it features a new album cut called ‘Isn’t It True’ and the RSD exclusive song ‘She’s In The Wall’. Sadly, we don’t have a stream as yet (and I’m not sure there will be one anytime soon). So you’ll have to make do with the ‘Trouble’ video (lifted from their 2009 album ‘Through The Devil Softly’). For uninitiated, the trio is comprised of My Bloody Valentine’s Colm Ó Cíosóig, Hope of Mazzy Star and Rader Bros’ Jim Putnam. Here’s to long lines this Record Store Day!

Mazzy Star – ‘I’m Less Here’

Perhaps some of you were lucky enough to pick up Mazzy Star‘s limited run 7inch (3000 on coke bottle clear) for Record Store Day this year. If not, at least we can watch the video! The two previously unreleased songs ‘I’m Less Here’ and b-side ‘Things’ have snuck into live sets for over a decade.

Mazzy Star- ‘Seasons Of Your Day’

Despite leaking online several weeks ago, Mazzy Star’s new album ‘Seasons Of Your Day’ is now “officially” available through Rhymes Of An Hour Records. Given that it’s been more than fifteen years since the group’s last full length, it’s amazing how cohesive this album is. After all, it was recorded over an extended period (and self produced) across locations in Norway, London and California.

Mazzy Star – ‘In The Kingdom’

‘Seasons Of Your Day’ is full of solid songwriting, the six piece haven’t bothered to conform to an audience, instead they’ve grown with them. There’s no forced melodies or slick production in play, its a mature listen. That said, there’s also no great surprises but Hope Sandoval’s vocal chords are as dreamy as ever. Coupled with a country feel, this record is certainly not “alternative rock” as they’re occasionally labelled.

Mazzy Star – ‘Common Burn’

Guitarist David Roback previously stated that an excessive amount of songs were recorded during the sessions for ‘Seasons Of Your Day’ and its likely that another LP won’t be far off. In the meantime, I’m happy to keep this on repeat.

Mazzy Star – ‘California’

The intergoogle has gone nuts over Mazzy Star’s new single ‘California’ and the announcement that the veteran duo will deliver a new album called ‘Seasons Of Your Day’ on September 24 through Rhymes Of An Hour Records (pre-order CD/LP). The acoustic piece is sparse and progressive, running at over five minutes. But more importantly, ‘California’ indicates Mazzy Star’s comeback LP will be solid! Of course, the news doesn’t come out of left field – we did have the new single ‘Common Burn’ back in 2011 with the promise of a new album (originally expected last year).

J Mascis – ‘Fade Into You’ (Mazzy Star Cover)

In related news, Dinosaur Jr.’s main man J Mascis has covered Mazzy Star’s classic ‘Fade Into You’ to promote some signature shoes with Vegan footwear company Keep – check ‘em out. Now I’ve finally found the right kicks to match my purple velure tracksuit!

Mazzy Star – 'Common Burn' And 'Lay Myself Down'

In case you haven’t heard…Mazzy Star is back – it’s only been fifteen years! Remember ‘Fade Into You’? The Californian dream pop outfit has a new single ‘Common Burn’, out today. At this point it’s a digital release only via singer Hope Sandoval’s own label Rhymes Of An Hour. A limited edition 7 inch of the single and B-side ‘Lay Myself Down’ will be released in November, according to www.mazzystar.nu. Mazzy Star will also be touring early 2012 before releasing a new album. All good news right!?

Mazzy Star’s new work is typically sedate and intimate. Both ‘Common Burn’ and ‘Lay Myself Down’ are stripped back and mostly acoustic with a few country flares around the edges. Hope Sandoval is sounding as great as ever. The group returns during a resurgence of like minded contemporary acts with a similar feel. Most notably, Widowspeak’s brilliant debut released this August.

Tamaryn – 'Love Fade'

Atmospheric shoegaze duo Tamaryn have announced they’re currently working on a follow up to 2010’s ‘Waves’. If you missed Tamaryn’s track ‘Sandstone’ then I recommend a listen. ‘Waves’ was full of sonic mangling, with overblown guitars against Tamaryn’s husky vocals. Whereas ‘Love Fade’ demonstrates a sedate side, it’s more dreamlike than an aural assault.
