Maria False – ‘Spades’ [Premiere]

maria-false-spades-beko

It’s no secret that we’re big Maria False fans, so today I’m super excited to share a new single called ‘Spades’ from their forthcoming EP (out later this year via Beko)! ‘Spades’ is a textured mass of provocative shoegaze with loads of atmosphere and a drugged-out swagger. By the noisy mid-section I was stuck in a ‘Spades’ trance… too many decibels! The song follows last year’s ‘When’ album, which packed eight tracks of ear bleeding rock, including my personal fave ‘Blossom’. French fans can catch the four piece at Espace B on March 26 with the mighty Spectres! More from Maria False soon.

Maria False – ‘Shoot It’

French shoegaze champs Maria False have released their impressive LP ‘When’ via A Quick One Records featuring ‘Shoot It’. The foursome just posted a fresh video to match the seasick feel of the track, which is a gem! ‘When’ is an ambitious record that’s well worth your minutes, stream it in full below.

Maria False – ‘Shadows’ [Premiere]

French psych/gazers Maria False will release their debut album ‘When’ on May 4 via A Quick One Records. The foursome wage war on perfect pitch by bending notes to oblivion in ‘Shadows’! A de-tuned, lo-fi rocker with a warped swagger (first public stream below). Having already listened through ‘When’, I can say that Maria False don’t hold back, it’s ambitious, colourful, and as overblown as ever. It’s a big step from their 2013 EP ‘Spots And Lines In A Frame‘, less noise-rock focused and insanely trippy! Maria False is the work of Yann Le Razavet, Bernard Marie Canévet, Matthieu Richard and Yann Canévet (also of Future and Venera 4).

Maria False – ‘Ribbon’

songs from nothing 2-artwork

French art collective Nøthing (not to be confused with the Philly band) are soon to release their second compilation ‘Songs from Nøthing #2’. In fact, the download was online for a day and then disappeared! The compilation covers the who’s who of French shoegaze, coldwave and post punk with exclusive songs from Venera 4, Avgvst, Future, Dead Horse One and heaps more! Rennes foursome Maria False open the proceedings with ‘Ribbon’, the first we’ve heard from them since their 2013 EP ‘Spots And Lines In A Frame‘. If this flicks your switch, there’s a similar compilation series called ‘Frenchedelia’ for free download here.

Maria False – ‘Mary’

MARIA FALSE - 'MARY'

The latest single and video from French noise rockers Maria False has arrived – ‘Mary’ is taken from their latest EP ‘Spots And Lines In A Frame’ (digital). Sadly the limited edition 7inch from Le Turc Mecanique is already sold out. The four piece have delivered a steady stream of material since forming last year, most notably their debut LP ‘Artefact’ which is available here.

The New French Underground

HERMETIC DELIGHT

Uhh, highly doubt any of these bands are heathen droogies à la A Clockwork Orange as implied in a recent wave of fear mongering by French media on the degenerating state of civil society. But ohhh, what a glorious metaphor! If only it were true, though…

That’s not to say there is a strong correlation between rad art and social disorder.

Whatever’s causing so much gritty, far-out darkwave, post-punk, garage, and shoegaze to emerge from Paris and Rennes, a very eclectic scene is flourishing- maybe it’s the beginning of a new underground or something in French indie? Except, there’s nothing particularly “French” about FUTURE or other groups like Catholic Spray, Subtle Turnhips, Hermetic Delight, Dead, Venera 4, and A V G V S T. This is kind of important, I guess, because you don’t typically think of punk, garage or psych rock coming from France.

Floored by how awesome this recent wave of new music sounds, we’ve decided to create a compilation of current French shoegaze, garage, and synthwave artists.  Many of whom were initially discovered via local Parisian labels and blogs such as Cranes, Inch Allah and Desire Records, as well as Foggy Girls Club and Walking With the Beast.
