Moaning – ‘Tired’

Sub Pop have some fresh signees that are a little shoegazey! Introducing Moaning, a Los Angeles trio who (after ten years of gigging) are really starting to heat up. Moaning have already been compared to Slowdive (one of the their heroes) along with New Order and Broadcast. The slick production is a precursor to their self-titled debut album (out March 2).

Bolinas – ‘Casa’

Bolinas have delivered a stunning single in ‘Casa’, a slow motion dream popper that is dripping melody. This is the third single from the Los Angeles-based band in the past twelve months (following ‘Angostura’ and ‘Vacation’). With tunes like this Bolinas deserve the attention of the blogosphere!

Launder – ‘Fade’

L.A.’s John Cudlip teams up with guitarist Zachary Cole Smith (of DIIV fame) and French singer Soko for a new project called Launder. The trio have posted ‘Fade’, taken from their forthcoming debut EP ‘Pink Cloud’ (due March 23). It should sit well with fans of jangly dream pop; a la Day Wave and Hazel English. In fact, the recording was produced by Day Wave (aka Jackson Phillips) in his Echo Park home studio. Definitely one to keep an ear on.

Cordurouy Dream – ‘Doll In Her’

Over the past six months L.A’s Cordurouy Dream have posted two EPs. The ‘Fleshtone’ EP is the latest, featuring ‘Doll In Her’. There’s no arguing that the shoegaze project don’t hide their influences, but if you’re reading this then you probably love MBV too! The EP does throw something new into the mix though, like the contrasting acoustic guitar in the opener, and the bouncy title track. It’s delightfully warped. ‘Doll In Her’ is the “poppiest” of the bunch, and that’s saying something considering it ventures off into a noisy excursion shortly after delivering some hooky “oohhh ahhhs”. Not sure where the Cordurouy Dream train has come from, or where it’s going to, but I’m keen to hear more.

Dorvin Borman – ‘Wrath’ [Premiere]

Introducing Dorvin Borman‘s debut single ‘Wrath’, it’s an impressive tune that’s part dream pop, part jangle pop. It’s the work of Los Angeles-based solo artist Devin Bierman who wrote, recorded and produced it DIY. It’s a song about attempting to overcome homebody anxiety in the hope of promoting progress through introspection. In his words, “a meditation on overcoming anxiety in the gut of a city that doesn’t need you to think for it”. Borman sings, “lying down in the city speaker, feeling the wrath of it all… Can I follow you and do what you do in your reverie…”

‘Wrath’ delivers delicate vocal harmonies with lo-fi charm over a wonky drum machine. The latter half of the song opens up into a chilled instrumental break, a nice contrast. The song is heavily inspired by Brutalist architecture and Jean-Luc Godard films, as well as artists and bands such as the Radio Dept., Melody’s Echo Chamber, and Cocteau Twins. A debut EP release is in the works (release date TBC) with more songs on the way in the coming months.
