She Sir – ‘Go Guitars’

SHE SIR - 'GO GUITARS'

Go Guitars‘ the new LP from She Sir arrives this week through Shelflife Records (shop). As expected, this is a strong debut and a blessing for fans of jangle/dream pop and indie guitar bands in general. The “Debut” label is used loosely, as the Austin-based quartet have been making music together for close to a decade, and released their first shoegaze-inspired EP ‘Who Can’t Say Yes‘ in 2006. In fact, She Sir’s seasoned line-up features ex-members of The Mountain Goats, John Vanderslice and Ringo Deathstarr. For ‘Go Guitars’ She Sir smoothed out the edges and sharpened their melodies, like the effortlessly catchy ‘Condesendidents’ and ‘Kissing Can Wait‘. The album cuts are consistently solid, with sugary vocal hooks dusted with harmony and warm reverb. ‘Go Guitars’ is a beautiful record, for fans of Violens, Felt, Beach House and Real Estate.

Viscous Liquid – ‘When I See You’

VISCOUS LIQUID - 'SONGS FOR JEALOUS LOVERS'

UK-based solo artist Rhys Williams aka Viscous Liquid started posting his spacey tunes on Soundcloud over a year ago before releasing his debut EP last October. So far we’ve heard an impressive mix of lo-fi surf pop, shoegaze and drone. Viscous Liquid has successfully fulfilled his aim to “sound like the Beach Boys strung out on barbiturates playing in some sort of wind tunnel.” But to keep it fresh, the new EP will feature his catchiest song to date ‘When I See You’ from the tentatively named ‘Songs For Jealous Lovers’ (expected late February / early March). It’s a surf-tinged jangle pop track with summery vocal harmonies. It eventually descends into a chaotic wash, so I suppose pop can only last so long! Keep an eye on Bandcamp for an official release and/or head to Soundcloud to hear more cuts from the EP, like the delightfully druggy ‘Beach Party Yesterday‘.

She Sir – ‘Kissing Can Wait’

SHE SIR - 'GO GUITARS'

She Sir‘s brand of jangle pop is full of shimmering melodies and sonic haze, inspired by the likes of The Go-Betweens, MBV and Felt. The Austin-based four piece will deliver their debut LP ‘Go Guitars’ on February 25 through Shelflife (pre-order). After having listened to four or five songs from the LP, I’ve got little doubt this will be a special album. For a limited time you can download an album track called ‘Condensedindents’ here (right click, save as).

Delay Trees – ‘Readymade’

DELAY TREES - 'READYMADE'

Delay Trees third album ‘Readymade’ is out now through Soliti! The Helsinki foursome delivered the jangle pop lead single ‘Perfect Heartache‘ late last year, but don’t expect the rest of the LP to follow suit. ‘Readymade’ is for the most part a sedate affair, full of beautiful dreamy pop tunes lashed with delay and reverb. It’s a sleepy listen but great for a late night headphone session. If ‘Fireworks’ flips your eggs then jump right in. In other album news, the upcoming LP’s by Mogwai, Warpaint and Alcest are either streaming or have been unceremoniously leaked! Google is your friend, more on those records soon.

Vulpix – ‘Hazy’

VULPIX - 'HAZY'

On January 10 Melbourne’s Vulpix will release the four track EP ‘Swarms’ featuring ‘Hazy‘. This lo-fi bedroom pop tune is a little less bright n’ sunny than the furry Pokemon character Vulpix takes his name from (thanks Google). The solo project promises “over-fuzzed guitars and distance verby drum-tracks, reminiscent of 80’s romantic new-wave with glimpses of unpolished indie shoegaze”. For fans of early Wild Nothing or Beach Fossils.

Mode Moderne – ‘Strangle The Shadows’

MODE MODERNE - 'STRANGLE THE SHADOWS'

Stellar single ‘Strangle The Shadows’ from Mode Moderne‘s forthcoming record ‘Occult Delight’ (out via Light Organ Records on January 21). Their latest is a melodic gem that crosses jangle pop and 80s new wave (pre-order).
