Helen – ‘Motorcycle’

Liz Harris (of Grouper) unveiled a new single last week with her side project Helen. It’s only short, but ‘Motorcycle’ points to an exciting debut album, one filled with copious reverb n’ fuzz! The Portland-based band, who originally planned to play thrash metal, will release the record ‘The Original Faces’ on September 4 (via Kranky).

Grouper – ‘Call Across Rooms’

This Halloween Grouper will deliver her new LP ‘Ruins’ via Yellow Electric/Kranky! ‘Call Across Rooms’ is the first public track, more evidence that the Portland native can devastate listeners with just her voice and a piano. The recording was made back in 2011, during a visit to Portugal. It’s bleak but beautiful. ‘Call Across Rooms’ is bound to be one of the most blogged tunes of the week, and rightly so!

Helen – ‘Felt This Way’

HELEN - 'FELT THIS WAY'

Liz Harris (Grouper) has formed a new trio called Helen (with Jed Bindeman and Scott Simmons). Their debut offering is a split single ‘Felt This Way / Dying All The Time’ (out now via iTunes). It sounds like these lo-fi recordings were captured on a cassette recorder, lying in the corner of the room during a jam session. The 7inch will be available from Exiled Records/Yellow Electric.

Grouper – ‘Vital’

One of the stand out records of 2013 so far, Grouper‘s ‘The Man Who Died In His Boat’ (available now through Kranky). The long standing solo project of Portland’s Liz Harris has been snaring fans since her debut LP in 2005. Been thrashing the record this week, if you haven’t heard ‘Vital’ yet – check it out below.
