M83 – 'Wait'

When M83‘s ‘Midnight City‘ was first released, a heap of unofficial videos showed up online. It’s happening more and more as up and coming filmmakers look to gain exposure. Some are well crafted and others are just an exercise in old youtube footage mashed into windows media maker. Which brings us to the latest unofficial M83 video for ‘Wait’.

Franck Deron uploaded it this week using vintage footage of monkeys… on their way to the moon. In this instance, it works rather well. Albeit in a completely inhumane way – poor monkeys! Of course it helps that ‘Wait’ is an incredible song to begin with, fresh from M83‘s new album ‘Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming‘.

Trailer Trash Tracys – ‘You Wish You Were Red’ & ‘Starlatine’

Trailer Trash Tracys have served up the new track ‘Starlatine’ from their forthcoming album ‘Ester’ due on January 12 through Double Six/Domino. The vocals of Suzanne Aztoria carry you through an oddly textured song. Trailer Trash Tracys manage to produce 50s pop melodies on ‘Starlatine’ alongside futuristic and experimental sounds. It’s a bizarre mix that gets under the skin.

‘You Wish You Were Red’ is a little easier to digest. The opening guitars instantly made me think of the Twin Peaks soundtrack. Just me perhaps? Its sparse simplicity gets hazier as it goes along. Eventually more vocals and harmonies drop in to wrap you up.

For ‘Ester’ Trailer Trash Tracys decided to record it all themselves. They obviously did a great job! In many ways the production is as much a part of the songs as the chords themselves. The odd choice of sounds is what makes Trailer Trash Tracys so unique and other worldly. According to the press release it was also recorded in a solfeggio scale which is uncommon in regular pop music. But I can’t comment on that because… well, for all I know they made that up. But I’m sure they didn’t!

Trailer Trash Tracys ‘Ester’ Tracklist…
1. Rolling – Kiss the Universe
2. You Wish You Were Red
3. Dies in 55
4. Engelhardt’s Arizona
5. Los Angered
6. Starlatine

M83 – 'Reunion' And 'This Bright Flash'

M83’s double album epic ‘Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming’ is just around the corner, pick it up on October 14. Sadly, the album was leaked online several weeks ago but lead man Anthony Gonzalez won’t be crying for long. ‘Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming’ is so impressive I imagine fans will be lapping up the physical release, the vinyl, the tea towel and the matching M83 fluffy slippers (if they decide to make some).

In a time where the ten track album is king, M83’s ‘Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming’ weighs in at over twenty two songs spanning two discs. It’s a bold move and shows how much effort has gone into its making. Given the material released to date, it looks like M83’s work on ‘Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming’ will land the Frenchmen on many obligatory end of year ‘best of’ lists.

M83 recorded the album the old fashioned way, in a traditional studio with a host of musicians. The brass and string sounds are where it really shows. This kind of production isn’t within reach of many artists these days, nor is it necessary anymore but in this case it really paid off.

Gonzalez recently spoke to Pitchfork about his intentions with the album, “The idea was to make a double album, but not something too long and pretentious and lyrical. When I was a teenager, I craved these kinds of records. I would go to the store and dig and dig until I found something big and ambitious. I bought the Smashing Pumpkins’ Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, and I was head over heels for it. I’ve never been a Beatles fan, but The White Album is a great piece of art.

I feel like an old guy saying this, but nowadays everything is made in a bedroom on a computer. I’m not denying that it’s a great time for music– and I listen to and enjoy tons of homemade music– but I need to go in a studio and work with musicians. I want to make things like they used to be when I was buying albums. I am still very nostalgic about this idea of an object– something that you can listen to for a long time. This album is a statement in that way. Of course I’m going to try to push people to buy it on CD or vinyl, but I know 90% of them will get it on iTunes, and that makes me sad.” (read the full interview here).

It’s impossible to label this release. M83 jump from bold electronic pop to throbbing rock to orchestral crescendos, there’s even a song about a magical frog that you’re not likely to forget. Regardless of what music you identify with, ‘Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming’ will have something for you. If you’ve never invested in M83 before, this record is a great place to start.

Sigur Ros – ‘Inni’

Sigur Ros have unveiled a mysterious online video ‘Inni’ with no explanation…

*UPDATE* – Apparently ‘Inni’ is a Vincent Morisset directed film and new live album recorded in 2008 to be screened as part of the Venice Film Festival on August 31.

So what’s ‘Inni‘? What are they building in there!? New album on the way? Given this point in their career a live, “greatest hits” album/dvd/blu-ray deal would make alot of sense (be lucrative).

But let the rumour mill run ‘Inni‘ wild. I’m putting my money on a Sigur Ros re-imagining of the Sgt Peppers album translated into Jonsi’s Icelandic Elvish? But I could be wrong.

Either way their marketing stunt has worked…dammit.

More updates on ‘Inni’ @ the Sigur Ros homepage.
