Twin Studies – ‘Altered Image’

Twin Studies have sauntered into Atlanta’s Sleeping Partner studios to record a beautiful demo with guest drummer Daniel Betts. The result is ‘Altered Image’, a wind blown shoegazer with beautiful melodies and a reminder that the Georgia-based three piece really need to give us a full length! Pick it up here.

Soft Wounds – ‘See The Sun’

Soft Wounds have just posted their first self-produced demo featuring ‘See The Sun‘. The Toronto-based foursome (Charlie Berger and Matt Rimon on guitar and vocals, with bassist Andrew Peach and drummer Geordie Robbins) have been cutting their teeth in the rehearsal space, with plans for a studio album underway. The five track collection is an early introduction, but we’ve got high hopes for these guys in 2015!

Less Western – ‘Broadcast’ (Demo)

“Hi my name is kevin and i get sad and play noise”, that’s the tagline for North Carolina’s Less Western. Which was originally the solo project of Kevin Sweeney but now has grown into a trio for their latest three track collection ‘The Broadcast Demo‘ (available now). In my opinion, it’s a great sounding demo for a home recording, with a definite Deerhunter influence. ‘Broadcast’ starts off slacker rock before wandering off towards the three minute mark. It’s a beautiful transition into a lo-fi shoegaze wash. The EP concludes with another stellar song ‘Sleep Bargain‘, a lullaby of sorts. Great work Kevin – you’re too modest!

Closedown – ‘Bumblebee’ (Original Demo)

Scott (from Surfing On Steam) has kindly posted some rare Closedown demos that have been converted from tape. He writes. “I can say this without hesitation, but Closedown were the first American shoegaze band ever. Four dudes from east Los Angeles who were not only incredible musicians but on par with many bands coming out of the UK.” Since hearing these recordings I’ve been educating myself on their 1994 record ‘Nearfield‘ (Silent Records) which these tracks eventually landed on. The ambient-based label has long since faded away and there’s precious little web fodder on Closedown or bandleader Jerry Battle. So thanks to Scott for sharing and keeping these sounds alive.

Whistlejacket – 'March Hare' (Demo)

Great tune out of left field from London four piece Whistlejacket. I’ve been told these guys are working on a four track EP (recorded by Pablo Clements of UNKLE and Psychonauts). Brits can catch them live on March 8 at The Macbeth (details here). By the way, I recommend taking a peek at Whistlejacket’s comical (literally) Soundcloud page.
