Olan Mill – 'Paths'

Stunning instrumental pieces from Olan Mill’s upcoming record ‘Paths’, available next month via Facture. The experimental neo-classical duo (Alex Smalley and Svitlana Samoylenko) released their debut ‘Pine‘ in 2010, before recording select cuts from ‘Paths’ live in Reading and Bristol. Olan Mill manage to create the impact of an orchestra with only two musicians, though their hooks dig deepest during the quietest moments. As stated in the release notes, the record intended to “physically move an audience as much as it aimed to devastate them emotionally.” Can’t get more honest than that, after hearing ‘Springs’ I say mission accomplished! 300 limited edition copies have been pressed on 180 gram vinyl, with a four panel letter pressed CD, fourteen page booklet, plus more goodies.

A Whisper In The Noise – 'Black Shroud' and 'Your Hand'

Take a deep, deep breath. Things are about to get a little cinematic and not in a Toy Story kind of way. The atmospheric hold of A Whisper In The Noise‘s new record ‘To Forget’ is far reaching. ‘Your Hand’ is an example of how minimal instrumentation and well composed songwriting can really knock you over with beauty. ‘Black Shroud’ is a little more conventional but only a little. The Minnesota art rockers (and I hate using that term) are helmed by composer West Thordson who creates light and dark with typically classical instruments along with guitars and electronics. ‘To Forget’ will end a four year hiatus when it is released via Mainstream Records on February 24 (Germany), February 27 (Europe & UK) and sorry USA, you have to wait until April 10. I don’t make the rules.

From The Mouth Of The Sun – 'Sitting In A Roofless Room'

From The Mouth Of The Sun is experimental ambient classical music. Sound like a challenge? Well, it is. But it’s worth the attention of any music lover and sets a very high bench mark for similar works in 2012. From The Mouth Of The Sun is a collaborative project between Sweden’s Dag Rosenqvist (Jasper TX) and the well regarded American artist Aaron Martin. From The Mouth Of The Sun’s debut album ‘Woven Tide’ will be released via Experimedia on January 31 featuring eight compositions of pure magic.
