My Bloody Valentine – ‘When You Sleep’ Wednesday 09 May, 2012

My Bloody Valentine

My Bloody Valentine‘s newly remastered records were released on Monday but they’ve only just arrived on my desk – swoon! ‘When You Sleep’ comes from the original tape remaster of ‘Loveless’ and despite conjecture, my ears are lapping it up. I don’t want to geek out on audio too much but I’m going to a little! The remasters are far brighter, the vocals sit further forward in the mix. This may not be to everyone’s liking but its a fresh experience nonetheless. There’s also better separation between the instruments, perhaps due to a wider stereo image (in other words, more panning going on). Kevin Shields has already stated that he hasn’t compressed the life out of the original recordings, so it still doesn’t have the perceived volume of current releases (for audiophiles, this is a good thing)! Looking forward to hearing how this translates to the vinyl editions due later in the year.
