A Grave With No Name‘s new record ‘Whirlpool’ is out today (July 16) via Lefse Records. Expect to indulge yourself in a varied collection of songs. This makes sense considering its primarily the work of one man (London’s Alex Shields) with collaborators including Echo Lake’s Linda Jarvis, Ides’ Alanna McCardle and Comanechi’s Akiko Matsuura. ‘Whirlpool’ cannot be summed up by its singles ‘Aurora‘ or ‘Dig Me Out‘, it ranges from the Mecury Rev sounding ‘Bones’ to the Weezer-esque ‘Origami’. While the approach and feel changes from track to track, the songwriting remains solid. A quiet achiever (of sorts) and one of my favourites of 2013.
