Dirty Three – 'Moon On The Land' and 'That Was Was' Monday 27 February, 2012
I’ve got a man crush on Warren Ellis. Not afraid to admit it either, though I’d like to think it has nothing to do with his homeless chic get up! It’s that he manages to get a completely unique sound from his violin. It wouldn’t sound the same if anyone else picked it up. Apart from keeping busy playing with the Bad Seeds and Grinderman, Ellis has rejoined Dirty Three band mates Mick Turner and Jim White for a new record. The original Melbourne-based instrumental trio have released ‘Toward The Low Sun’ featuring the desolate ‘Moon On The Land’ and the noisier album cut ‘That Was Was’. Sounding as improvised, abstract and raw as ever, ‘Toward The Low Sun’ is a predominately relaxed listen. However, there’s generally a drum pattern or guitar riff to obscure the listener from view, every melody comes at a price which is what makes it worth the while. Sydney locals can still snap up tickets to the Opera House Show on March 21 but be quick!
