Aires – ‘Contraplacado’

aires-profile

Get ready to have your hair blown back by the new experimental project Aires (out of Lisbon, Portugal). The eight minute epic ‘Contraplacado’ is enough to put the fear of God into all of us – prepare the fallout shelter folks! Aires is only a few months old, born with a view to explore drone, ambient and field recordings and then combine them with a love of noise rock and shoegaze. The self-titled debut EP (out via Enough Records) is cinematic, dark and gives MBV’s ‘Holocaust’ a run for its money! The beautiful part is, just when you think it’s getting too left field, you realize a melody has already been set up, taking you to another head space. Fans of experimental tunes can stream/download at Bandcamp.

The Churchhill Garden Feat. Hideka – ‘Forever’

THE CHURCHHILL GARDEN FEAT. HIDEKA - 'FOREVER'

The Churchhill Garden (solo artist Andy Jossi) has returned with the new single ‘Forever’ (free download). The Swiss producer teamed up with Japanese singer Hideka for the song, who is known for her work with The Pristines and also for her solo material (which is mostly dream pop or shoegaze related). However ‘Forever’ is a cinematic post rocker, it swells and contracts with multi-layered sounds galore! Paging Alcest fans.

Hawkmoth – ‘Calamitas’

HAWKMOTH - 'CALAMITAS'

SBWR rarely delves into the realms of metal but when it’s this good, exceptions must be made! Hawkmoth‘s latest album ‘Calamitas‘ was released today (CD/Digital) featuring a collection of instrumental stoner/sludge rock meets post-metal chaos! It’s been almost four years in the making and follows their 2011 debut LP. The Sydney-based four piece have enlisted drummer Jason Canelas for the recording which has added a new layer of complicity and depth. ‘Calamitas’ was tracked at 301 Studios (the same space used for Springsteen’s latest) with mastering from Alan Douches (Dillinger Escape Plan, Japandroids, Odonis Odonis). So yes, it’s one of the better sounding post-metal albums you’re likely to hear. Album cut ‘Hitler’s Dogs’ is the shortest song on the record but it still drops waves of doom on your head! Fans of the genre will want to take the time out for this one – stream/download the rest here.

Alcest – ‘Shelter’

ALCEST - 'SHELTER'

French post rockers Alcest have well and truly left their metal days behind them with the release of their fourth album ‘Shelter‘ this week. Their abrasive past has made way for a gorgeous sounding album, full of swelling instrumentation and shimmering edges. Having Sigur Ros producer Birgir Jón Birgisson in tow must’ve made the journey to dizzying euphoria a little easier. Album cut ‘Away’ features guest vocalist Neil Halstead (of Slowdive / Black Hearted Brother). Another fine reason to jump straight into this LP!

Mogwai – ‘Rave Tapes’

MOGWAI - 'RAVE TAPES'

Its album number eight for Mogwai! ‘Rave Tapes’ hits February 20 via Rock Action, recorded in the awesomely named ‘Castle Of Doom‘ studios in Glasgow. The Scottish post rockers built both the label and studio, I suppose that’s the prize for surviving almost twenty years in the business. Their latest ten track creation will appeal to long standing fans, they haven’t lost any edge (or gone “soft”). Lead track ‘Remurdered‘ raised eyebrows last year due to its synths but really, this album is about guys rocking out in a room together. And once again, they’ve created an album that’s familiar but fresh.

Alcest – ‘Délivrance’

ALCEST - 'SHELTER'

Neil Halstead (of Slowdive / Black Hearted Brother) has added his vocals to Alcest‘s forthcoming LP ‘Shelter’, but we’ll have to wait til its released on January 17 via Prophecy Productions (Jan 21 for North America). Until then, here’s the second single ‘Délivrance’ which was produced by Birgir Jón Birgisson (known for his work with Sigur Rós). The French post rock outfit have left their black metal days behind them, now with a cinematic scope that’s so dramatic you may want to climb a mountain after listening to it.

Wozniak – ‘MFMB’

WOZNIAK - 'MFMB'

Wozniak are on a self confessed mission “to cause terminal tinnitus with their brooding… cocktail of feedback, reverb and delay”! The post rocking four piece hail from Edinburgh and have released their debut single ‘MFMB’ (available @ Bandcamp). Influenced by no wave and shoegaze, Wozniak’s soundscapes are only in their infancy but are already ear shaking with their angular riffs and suspense-filled instrumentals.

Russian Circles – ‘Deficit’

RUSSIAN CIRCLES - 'DEFICIT'

When it comes to post metal, I’m pretty clueless. But when it comes to Russian Circles, an exception must be made, ‘Deficit’ is just so damn awesome! The apocalyptic guitar tones work perfectly against one of the most impressive drum tracks I’ve heard this year – amazing work. Pick up Russian Circles new album ‘Memorial’ from October 29 through Sargent House.

Solkyri – ‘Hunter’

SOLKYRI - 'HUNTER'

Are You My Brother?’ the debut album from Sydney’s Solkyri is available now via Bird’s Robe Records (also home to sleepmakeswaves and Panzer Queen). The trio are known for their post rock explosions and intricate instrumentals, album cut ‘Hunter’ is but one example. At its core ‘Are You My Brother?’ thrives on the guitar, bass, drums combination but breaks out with additional musicians adding strings, horns and vocals (Hannah Cameron) on ‘Home’. If you’re a fan of instrumental tunes, post rock or experimental music – check out the rest here.
