Two People Playing Music – ‘Beehive’

An introduction is tough for a song like ‘Beehive’. Get ready for some psychedelic, freeform instrumental jazz!? Hmm…that’s the best I can do. Two People Playing Music are a unique animal and ‘Beehive’ is no different. The distorted keyboard tones curl about the rapidly evolving drum groove. It’s hard to know where it’ll go next. The Florida-based duo (keyboardist Chase Hudson and drummer Sean Sullivan) are releasing a new record ‘Desert Country and Physics’ this June. In the meantime, there’s plenty of mind bending music to hear at bandcamp.

Gallucci – 'DisAAster'

I love it when a track jumps up and surprises you. ‘DisAAster’ is a brilliant web of guitars going head to head. In fact, Gallucci is two brothers from Sydney (Jacob & Timothy Nicastri) duelling it out. Influenced by Fugazi and Minutemen, Gallucci have released their new album ‘Click To Switch’. Download it free via their webpage Die Punk Death, or be a stand up guy and donate some. Oh and, hilarious cover art makes it all the more worthwhile!

Pelican – 'Lathe Biosas'

Chicago based post-metal band Pelican release their new EP on April 10 via Southern Lord Records. They’ve opted for the catchy title of  ’Ataraxia/Taraxis’!  ’Lathe Biosas’ (free download here) is old school riffage with no frills. If you love heavy guitars but can’t stomach devilish metal vocals then this might be right up your street!

Olan Mill – 'Paths'

Stunning instrumental pieces from Olan Mill‘s upcoming record ‘Paths’, available next month via Facture. The experimental neo-classical duo (Alex Smalley and Svitlana Samoylenko) released their debut ‘Pine‘ in 2010, before recording select cuts from ‘Paths’ live in Reading and Bristol. Olan Mill manage to create the impact of an orchestra with only two musicians, though their hooks dig deepest during the quietest moments. As stated in the release notes, the record intended to “physically move an audience as much as it aimed to devastate them emotionally.” Can’t get more honest than that, after hearing ‘Springs’ I say mission accomplished! 300 limited edition copies have been pressed on 180 gram vinyl, with a four panel letter pressed CD, fourteen page booklet, plus more goodies.

Dirty Three – 'Moon On The Land' and 'That Was Was'

I’ve got a man crush on Warren Ellis. Not afraid to admit it either, though I’d like to think it has nothing to do with his homeless chic get up! It’s that he manages to get a completely unique sound from his violin. It wouldn’t sound the same if anyone else picked it up. Apart from keeping busy playing with the Bad Seeds and Grinderman, Ellis has rejoined Dirty Three band mates Mick Turner and Jim White for a new record. The original Melbourne-based instrumental trio have released ‘Toward The Low Sun’ featuring the desolate ‘Moon On The Land’ and the noisier album cut ‘That Was Was’. Sounding as improvised, abstract and raw as ever, ‘Toward The Low Sun’ is a predominately relaxed listen. However, there’s generally a drum pattern or guitar riff to obscure the listener from view, every melody comes at a price which is what makes it worth the while. Sydney locals can still snap up tickets to the Opera House Show on March 21 but be quick!

Panzer Queen – ‘Flight From The White Shores’

Here’s a post rock rollercoaster from Panzer Queen‘s second EP ‘When All Our Fathers Worshiped Stock and Stone’ released through The Bird’s Robe Collective. The initial sonic blast wanes into watery territory before gaining steam and exploding with brass, a wash of cymbals and a reverb soaked guitar solo.
