Jesper Lundager – 'Dyeing Lilies Brighter Colours'

Danish solo artist Jesper Lundager shows his love for M83 on his latest track ‘Dyeing Lilies Brighter Colours’. Its the opener and title track from his new EP which plays out like a swelling, 80s overture! The intensely delayed guitars hold together the reverb laden drums, swirling electronics and synths.

Australian multi-instrumentalist James Wallace aka Wintercoats has signed with American label Cascine for his upcoming EP ‘Sketches’ (digital & 12” available on September 27).

The first single ‘Working On A Dream’ has a brilliant video (directed by Feel Good Lost) check it out below. Wintercoats latest has a cinematic feel, Wallace creates his own dreamy orchestra without getting over indulgent. The visuals in the ‘Working On A Dream’ video suck you in with simplicity. Locals can catch Wintercoats live with Mono at The Forum Theatre on October 7 as part of the Melbourne Festival.

James is offering up his debut EP ‘Cathedral’ for free here. You can also download ‘Working On A Dream’ free here or visit Wintercoats @ Bandcamp / the Wintercoats Blog or thru Cascine Records.

Mogwai are set to deliver their second release of the year following their album ‘Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will’. Which, might I add is top shelf material! ‘San Pedro’ stuck out to me for its abrasive, raw riffage! Plus it sounds like it was recorded live with minimal mics and studio trickery.

Fast forward to now and the Scottish post rock kings have another four tracks in the shape of the ‘Earth Division EP’. It’s a sedate affair with a short opener followed by…get ready for it…some vocals! I know, it’s rare for Mogwai. ‘Drunk and Crazy’ is the black sheep of the four, with a brash gated electronic stutter contrasted with strings. This will be available via Rock Action on September 12, North Americans will get their turn through Sub Pop the following day.

Mogwai – ‘Earth Division’ EP Tracklist…

1. Get To France
2. Hound of Winter
3. Drunk and Crazy
4. Does This Always Happen?

Mogwai have recently announced Australian tour dates as part of The Harvest Festival this November. For more Mogwai information including British, European & Japanese tour dates go to www.mogwai.co.uk.

Rahhhrrr! Grun to me sounds like the name of a big bad goblin from a fantasy novel… but no, apparently its German for ‘Green’. The Sydney experimental four peice were orginally known as Greenland, the title of their debut LP, so it all makes sense.

‘Greenland’ shows off Grun‘s ability to rock out, provide intricate melodies and retreat into quiter piano lead moments. Plus singer Katy Wren provides some guest vocals to several songs on a predominately instrumental album. The melodies are more absorbing in the album’s quiter moments but I love the balls out rock crescendos, ‘Imperfect’ is one example.

Grun‘s ‘Greenland’ is available now through Laughing Outlaw Records and they are offering their first EP ‘The Prisons Of Language’ with a limited edition version of the album from their website, here. Ohh, and did I mention the top shelf artwork…

Grun
Sydney locals can catch Grun live with Hinterlandt, Hawkmoth and Adam Cole’s Trappist Afterland Band at the Landsdowne on September 1st (kicking off around 8pm). That’s this Thursday folks!

Hinterlandt – ‘Migration Motion Movement’

Headphones. Check. Comfy chair. Check. Mind bending experimental soundscapes courtesy of Hinterlandt. Double check! On September 1, Sydney-based solo artist Jochen Gutsch aka Hinterlandt will release his umpteen studio album ‘Migration Motion Movement’.

The German-Australian muso has an impressive resume of releases (upwards of ten Hinterlandt albums) plus live experience stretching from Sydney to London, Rome to Helsinki, Berlin to Cologne and beyond.

Hinterlandt uses music to communicate abstractions, its a listening experience that will divide the traditionalists and challenge the open minded music fan. This is done by journeying through a swathe of instruments. Hinterlandt produces acoustic sounds together with electronic sweeps, percussion, noise and distortion combined to create a unique soundtrack.

Attempting to record a twenty minute song with so much going on is a tall task. But doing it live with just one person is incredible. That’s serious sampling, cueing and performance ability…and lots of passion! Sydney locals can catch Hinterlandt live with Grun, Hawkmoth and Adam Cole’s Trappist Afterland Band at the Landsdowne on September 1.

The easiest way to grab the ‘Migration Motion Movement’ album is via download at Hinterlandt’s bandcamp page for just $5AUD! Or else visit www.hinterlandt.net for more live dates, discography and some live Hinterlandt video goodies.
