Soft Metals – ‘Psychic Driving’

Portland’s synth pop duo Soft Metals have released their self-titled debut album featuring ‘Psychic Driving’. The pair (Patricia Hall and Ian Hicks) only teamed up a few years ago and already their song writing is solid.

The Soft Metals album lays its melodies bare with vocals cocooned in minimal arrangements, wrapped in reverb. Perhaps the album could’ve used some less mechanical moments but its early days for Soft Metals. If they maintain their current work ethic there’ll be another full length just around the corner.

Heart Shaped Rock – Papercutz Remix

:papercutz have offered up their lastest remix of Heart Shaped Rock as a free download (right click, save link as).

The :papercutz remix takes an already dramatic song and twists it into an alien-like wash of pitch bending vocals, ponderous electronic percussion and thick, thick synthwork.

Portuguese artist Bruno Miguel kicked off his :papercutz project to test the waters between acoustic and electronic sounds. Now :papercutz is an entity in its own right, complete with touring band. Check out the :papercutz website for more information.

Heart Shaped Rock on the other hand is Jason Grier and Ramona Gonzalez (aka Nite Jewel). The Heart Shaped EP with Nite Jewel is the latest in Grier’s ‘(anti)love jams’ series and is available digitally, on CD, vinyl and cassette from human ear here. The six track journey runs at over thirty minutes so there’s a lot of music for your dime!

Box Of Wolves – ‘The Gaze’

Gabriel Akinrinmade aka Box Of Wolves mustn’t sleep. The Canadian producer covers all sorts of indie tunes on The Venom Blog, recently offered up some mixes on soundcloud and now is giving away a damn fine EP called ‘Courtship’ (pick it up here).

‘The Gaze’ is a great example of Gab’s talent and love of all things Chillwave. For a full write up, hop over to the Box Of Wolves blog @ www.boxofwolves.tumblr.com. Here’s hoping we don’t have to wait too long until Box Of Wolves drops a debut album.

Slow Magic – ‘Sorry Safari’

‘Sorry Safari’ is an interesting walk through a textured haze, very much like the summery artwork that goes along with it. There’s no vocals and no need for them. Slow Magic has thrown in a mildly Latin groove with synths flying about together with some beautiful piano samples… or are they? Somehow I think this is one producer that actually bothered showing up to his piano lessons… I tip my hat.

Head on safari (sorry, couldn’t resist) over at Slow Magic’s Bandcamp page.

Exitmusic will give you the chills! Aleksa’s voice is frosty, hollow, disembodied… like an ice cube for your ear. Sounds horrible right? But its not, take a listen to ‘The Sea’ and tell me I’m wrong.

The Brooklyn based (yup, Brooklyn strikes again) duo of Devon Church and Aleksa Palladino are set to release their debut EP ‘From Silence’ on October 4 from Secretly Canadian records (they are offering ‘The Sea’ as a free download here & ‘The Hours’ remix is available at RCRD LBL). If you’re in the New York area you can catch them live at the Glasslands Gallery, Brooklyn on August 19.

I came across the Californian synth poppers The New Division the old fashion way. By hearing someone else play it, in a magazine shop no less. Rather than approach the hipster shop attendant and ask, I quickly shazamed it on my phone (so perhaps not so old fashioned). Either way, I was struck by the simplicity of the track ‘Starfield’ and how shamelessly it drew from Depeche Mode (in a good way).

Now songwriter John Kunkel and co have announced a new album ‘Shadows’ with the lead single ‘Opium’ which doesn’t beat around the bush in regards to subject matter. The 14 track album will be released on September 27.
