Widowspeak – 'Ballad Of The Golden Hour'

Widowspeak‘s self-titled debut was one of the stand out records of 2011, the Brooklyn duo (Molly Hamilton & Robert Earl Thomas) drew immediate comparisons to Mazzy Star with the singles ‘Harsh Realm’ and ‘Gun Shy’. On January 22 Widowspeak release their new LP ‘Almanac‘ through Captured Tracks. The first single ’Ballad Of The Golden Hour’ (free download) shirks previous comparisons, the mournful atmosphere has a country twist. Acoustic strumming with slide guitar and dare I say, optimistic? I guess we’ll find out in January whether ‘Almanac’ continues the positive outlook.

Old Earth – ‘Less Words’

A special song for you from Old Earth. Guaranteed mood changer in under four minutes. Perhaps leaving you with a… ‘err, what just happened’ moment? ‘Less Words‘ creates a sense of space with tape hiss, clean guitar and harmonic vocals that blow in and out of the mix. I suppose this is an example of how to use reverb tastefully. Not something usually praised around here! ‘Less Words’ comes from Old Earth’s album ‘A Low Place At The Old Place‘, available here. Note that the six song collection comes as an eighteen minute file.

The Ocular Audio Experiment – ‘Elizabeth’s Song’

Strange, spooky and surreal. I think its fair to say that The Ocular Audio Experiment aren’t for everyone. But for some, their latest record ’The Witch’s Whispering Tomes‘ will be something worth pouring over. Delivered in two parts, it has the same twelve psych’d out songs recorded in different styles. I’m still getting through the whole collection but ’Elizabeth’s Song’ has stuck out so far, the part two version would make Tom Waits blush. Its a blues infused piece of country death, the kind of campfire song that will stay with you.

Possimiste – 'Clockwordbird'

Possimiste‘s latest single ‘Clockwordbird’ is labelled as ‘hard-to-define-folk’ on Soundcloud. Couldn’t be more true, this is something different. First impressions sent fairytale books to mind, maybe a children’s fantasy soundtrack. Its not going to be everyone’s cup of tea but the talent and intricacy is unmistakable. Possimiste is a 19-year-old Estonian artist, who bares comparisons to Ane brun, Arvo Pärt, Sigur Ros and Björk. ’Clockwordbird’ is her sixth single, check out the rest here.

Old Amica – 'Ghost In The Machine'

Swedish indie folk duo Old Amica have physically released their LP ‘Debris’ for the first time. Pick up the limited, numbered release here with artwork by Mr. Björn Kleinhenz. Lead track ‘New Start‘ was posted earlier in the year but album cut ‘Ghost In The Machine’ offers up an incredible, otherworldly ballad.

Day Joy – 'Animal Noise'

Indie folkers Day Joy have released their new EP ‘Animal Noise‘. The pastoral title track weaves animal noises into the top and tail, despite being tracked at home in the living room. Studio trickery or lots of pet birds? Terrible joke, apologies! The Orlando, Florida duo will appeal to downbeat acoustic lovers (I didn’t say Fleet Foxes) and those who don’t mind some experimental tangents.

The Great American Canyon Band – 'Tumbleweed'

Ambient country? ‘Tumbleweed’ is an Americana styled ballad bathed in atmospheric reverb and delay. The husband and wife duo (Paul and Krystal Jean Masson) record as The Great American Canyon Band and will release the ‘Tumbleweed’ 7inch on April 21 (Record Store Day) as premiered on Stereogum. It’s also the opener of their debut record, following the release of last year’s ‘Wild Heart’ EP (available here).

Coyote Fever – 'Treetops'

Introducing Coyote Fever, a five piece indie folk outfit from Provo, Utah. Their influences of Surfer Blood, Fleet Foxes and Animal Collective are evident from their tune ‘Treetops’. The traditional vocal lines are ghostly against the church organ and keys, with sprawling moments that slowly build and gallop away. Coyote Fever are currently working on their debut record, check Facebook for updates.

Old Amica – 'New Start'

Despite Old Amica‘s ‘New Start’ being decidely glum, it’s a brilliant track! The Swedish group have released their debut album ‘Debris’ which is perfectly suited to a late night listening session (for fans of Gem Club, The Middle East, Elliott Smith).
