After salivating over the upcoming release of new material from Weekend, the rock gods have delivered! That is, the rock gods at Slumberland Records who have given fans a taste of Weekend’s new single ‘Hazel’. The post punk outfit have officially announced the ‘Red’ EP will be available on September 20! This follows Weekend’s much loved ‘Sports’ album released in 2010.

“The goal for the EP was to remove some of the haze from the first LP and be up front about all the fucked up things that were happening musically and lyrically,” says Weekend bassist/singer Shaun Durkan in a press release.

“We’ve always been interested in indulgence and restraint and we tried to push that further with these recordings,” adds guitarist Kevin Johnson. “Maybe this song doesn’t have a guitar in it, or maybe we use a synthesizer or there’s no distortion or no drums. We were pulling back to make everything a little more searing.”

Weekend – ‘Red’ EP Tracklist…

01. Sweet Sixteen
02. Hazel
03. Your Own Nothing”
04. The One You Want
05. Golfers

Hinterlandt – ‘Migration Motion Movement’

Headphones. Check. Comfy chair. Check. Mind bending experimental soundscapes courtesy of Hinterlandt. Double check! On September 1, Sydney-based solo artist Jochen Gutsch aka Hinterlandt will release his umpteen studio album ‘Migration Motion Movement’.

The German-Australian muso has an impressive resume of releases (upwards of ten Hinterlandt albums) plus live experience stretching from Sydney to London, Rome to Helsinki, Berlin to Cologne and beyond.

Hinterlandt uses music to communicate abstractions, its a listening experience that will divide the traditionalists and challenge the open minded music fan. This is done by journeying through a swathe of instruments. Hinterlandt produces acoustic sounds together with electronic sweeps, percussion, noise and distortion combined to create a unique soundtrack.

Attempting to record a twenty minute song with so much going on is a tall task. But doing it live with just one person is incredible. That’s serious sampling, cueing and performance ability…and lots of passion! Sydney locals can catch Hinterlandt live with Grun, Hawkmoth and Adam Cole’s Trappist Afterland Band at the Landsdowne on September 1.

The easiest way to grab the ‘Migration Motion Movement’ album is via download at Hinterlandt’s bandcamp page for just $5AUD! Or else visit www.hinterlandt.net for more live dates, discography and some live Hinterlandt video goodies.

I’ve only just come across Youngteam and I’m glad I did. The Swedish rockers have released ‘Daydreamer’ on Northern Star Records featuring the stand out tracks ‘Your Love’ and ‘Summertime’.

Its one of those albums where each track offers up something new without feeling disjointed. From atmospheric post rock build ups, to sweet as pie pop moments and everything in between. ‘Daydreamer’ is fast becoming one of my 2011 favourites.

Puro Instinct – ‘Stilyagi’

Puro Instinct may have wrapped their Summer tour with Geneva Jacuzzi but they aren’t done yet. After raising some cash on the kickstarter ‘Escape From L.A’ appeal, Puro Instinct are heading to the Primavera Club in Spain on November 23, no doubt more European dates will follow.

Formerly known as the band Pearl Harbor, the Kaplan sisters (Piper and Skylar) released their debut album ‘Headbangers In Ecstasy’ via Mexican Summer this year. The lead track ‘Stilyagi’ features a thirty second intro which is much like weathering an 8 bit snowstorm before reaching the meat and potatoes of the song. It’s a sullen dream pop tune that has hipster written all over it but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have merit. The album on the other hand, may leave you feeling a little unfed with pitchy vocals at times.

Craft Spells – 'Form The Morning Heat'

This is fairytale stuff. Craft Spells are still touring the globe (dates below) following the release of their DIY, home-produced 2011 ‘Idle Labor’ album.

The Craft Spells story is plain and simple. Founder Justin Paul Vallesteros started messing around with keyboards in his Californian bedroom and then, he gave birth to an album. A very good one. Hmm… I’ve messed around with keyboards before. I never birthed an album! *sigh*

Alas, since those creative moments in 2009 Justin has built himself a strong touring band and Craft Spells has the U.K in their sights…

Tamaryn – ‘Sandstone’

Listen to the guitars on ‘Sandstone’… epic! I find it hard to believe this song didn’t come about by accident, or at least the result of fumbling about with a sampler, a delay pedal, fairy dust, something! Tamaryn released their shoegaze opus ‘The Waves’ last August but I keep coming back to ‘Sandstone’.

Tamaryn (a New Zealand native) came to collaborate with Rex John Shelverton in San Francisco in 2009 before releasing their full length on Mexican Summer/Kemado Records. ‘The Waves’ does have its weaker moments but for a debut album they’ve already mastered their sound.

‘Love Fade’ is another Tamaryn stand out, not unlike Widowspeak‘s Mazzy Star-esque debut. The video isn’t bad either…
