Tashaki Miyaki

Californian band Tashaki Miyaki have just released new versions of ‘Somethin’ Is Better Than Nothin” and ‘Keep Me In Mind’. These are alternate cuts that shine a different light on the originals. Long gone are the buzzing jangly guitars and rough edges.

The strength of the songwriting and performance holds up without the noise, infact I prefer these takes. The strings and bells fit perfectly against the thick reverb of the vocals on ‘Keep Me In Mind’. Its 50s styled melody is simple and easy to follow but its a lament all the same.

Like many, when I first heard about them I figured Tashaki Miyaki was a Japanese singer,  but no. The Los Angeles outfit have been on the radar for a few months. NME first picked up on Tashaki Miyaki as bloggers started to draw comparisons between them and Best Coast. However, there’s more dynamics at play and the alternate versions prove it. Subtlety goes along way.
